What Everybody Ought To Know About Adultery According To The Bible
We live in difficult times. That much is true. Think about it, we live in a time when the world is trying to change everything that was set down by the Lord thousands of years ago. Morals and standards have changed a lot since the time of Moses and Abraham. People are more open, much more liberated, than they were during the time of kings and pharaohs. Simply put, we live in a very different world nowadays.
There was a time when God called Moses to the mountain to claim His ten commandments. Moses shared and taught to his people these commandments, so they may live their lives according to God’s will and plan, and in the service of the Lord. One of these commandments read, “Thou shall not commit adultery.” It was very clear how God stood on the subject.
The Bible verses tell us this story. God does not favor adultery. He commands us to stay away from it, to steer clear of its temptations. But modern society is telling us a different story. With everything going on in the media these days, what they show on TV, what they air on the radio, what they film in the movies, a lot of things doesn’t get along well with God’s commandment and what the Bible verses are saying about adultery.
So who do you listen to? A commandment from thousands of years ago? Or this trend of the modern world? Whose whisper echoes the loudest?
Let’s take a look at some of the most famous Bible verses that speak about adultery.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’ but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28)
“He said to them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her. If a woman herself divorces her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery.'” (Mark 10:11-12)
“‘Foods for the belly, and the belly for foods,’ but God will bring to nothing both it and them. But the body is not for sexual immorality, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.” (1 Corinthians 6:13)
“Don’t you know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!” (1 Corinthians 6:15)
The Bible verses speak about adultery in many forms. Lusting after a woman is already committing adultery in the heart. Divorce is also a form of adultery. If you look at it this way, then adultery is very much rampant in modern society.
But the Bible also says this about adultery: that our bodies are members of Christ, and we should not put it to shame by committing adultery. God’s commandment holds – we should not commit any form of adultery. To do so is to put God and His name in vain.
