What is it About Hypnotherapy That Makes it Work?

Hypnotherapy came from the word hypnosis derived from the Greek word “hypnos” or sleep. Hypnotherapists use hypnosis to bring about trance or deep relaxation into someone so that he or she could be in an altered state of consciousness. Once a person is in a very deep focused state, that person can become unusually responsive to an idea or suggestion of the hypnotherapist. However, this does not mean that the hypnotherapist can control the mind and free will of the person under trance. On the other hand, when the person is under trance he will still remain conscious with his surrounding except that he feels he is dreaming, talking and listening to someone supreme. Since the hypnotherapist’s goal is to actually train people how to manipulate their own state of consciousness and awareness, he can suggest to the patients to gain control of their own bodily functions and be responsive to certain psychological responses in positive manner.

There are actually several stages of hypnosis before the completion of encouraging positive behaviour to the patient and these are the following:

– Reframing or knowing the problem
– Relaxing and engaging deeply with the hypnotherapist’s words
– Letting go of the patient’s problem or disassociating the patient with the problem
– Reacting or complying of the patient with the suggestion of the hypnotherapist
– Going back to usual awareness
– Making a reflection of the experience

These stages will bring about the realisation that the patient is doing something negative to himself that is why undesirable feelings and reactions come to him. The hypnotherapist can be able to reach out to the patient during his deep trance and then suggest to him positive behaviour so that he will try to avoid negative feelings and negative behaviour and change it to positive responses.

Hypnotherapy is also used to reduce the fear and anxieties of people who cannot get medical help especially those who have developed phobia to emergency rooms, dentists, needles and the like. It is the best way to make people feel comfortable and overcome their fears and anxieties, so some hypnotherapists are now working on variety of medical settings such as relieving fears for patients that are on emergency rooms, alleviating phobias to persons who are afraid of needles and dentists and comforting those who are suffering from chronic and untreatable diseases.

Clinical studies also suggest that with hypnosis, patients can improve their immune function, increase their mode of relaxation, eliminate stress in their senses and ease the pain, tension and feelings of anxieties. There are also studies showing that when hypnotherapy is paired with medical treatment, the recovery can increase considerably as in the case of burn patients. This is because pain in treatment and medication can be alleviated by hypnosis alone so generally it shows that with hypnosis and hypnotherapy the need for medication is greatly reduced while improving the mental and physical condition of the patient. On other medical setting, some dentists are now using hypnotherapy to control gagging and bleeding of gums of patients because these conditions are only brought about by fear and anxieties so a patient who is calm and relaxed cannot experience these.

If you want to find licensed hypnotherapists, you just need to do a bit of research online. There are medical doctors, registered nurses, family counsellors, registered nurses who have received training and are now licensed hypnotherapists.
