Karaoke Tips – Presentation And Warming Up

In this installment of Karaoke Tips, I want to talk about presentation.

Too many people go to Karaoke bars not giving a rat’s behind what they look like. And while this is all well and good, especially since everybody is there to just have a good time, imagine the impression you would make if you just put a little thought into presentation.

For example, let’s say you decided to do an Elvis song. How cool would it be if you actually got an Elvis like outfit, did your hair that way and wore his sun glasses? You would, if nothing else, be remembered. And if you actually sounded like Elvis…well, you’ve got a show stopper.

What about props? Well, let’s say you’re doing a Who song where Pete Townsend just happens to be singing lead and doing one of his windmill guitar riffs. How cool would it be if you brought along an electric guitar and did one of those? Make sure you’re limber enough to pull it off first. We don’t want any torn ligaments or anything like that. Naturally, to pull something like that off, you’ll need a mic on a stand.

Point is, presentation is everything. A great vocal performance where you’re singing “Puttin On The Ritz” wearing a T-shirt and jeans just doesn’t have the same impact as if you were to go there in a top hat and tails. Now THAT is a show stopper.

So before you head on down to your local karaoke bar, think about presentation and what you can do to add that little something extra to your performance to make it a memorable one.

Now I want to go over warming up.

There are a few things you should do to warm up your voice before you actually go on stage to sing. I am going to go over the more common ones. These should help make your vocal performance a lot better.

1. Humming. Yes, hum. What you want to do is start humming with a low pitch and then gradually raise the pitch. As you do this, you will feel a buzzing in your nasal passage. What this exercise does is it actually loosens up the throat so that is becomes easier to sing. Try it for about 2 or 3 minutes before actually going on stage to sing.

2. Lip Trill. You know how it sounds if you try to talk under water and what your lips do? Well, try to repeat that out of the water. Let your lips vibrate in a relaxed manner. At the same time, control the supply of air with your diaphragm muscles. This is another great way to warm up before going on stage.

3. Scale Singing. This is actually the most common. What you want to do is sing up and down the scale going up by a half step each time you go through the exercise until you reach your top note in your range. You want to do this singing, ooh, ah, and me. This will be the final loosening of your vocal chords and should make singing any song a lot easier.

It is critical that you warm up your voice before singing. If the vocal chords are tight, they will not respond. And what happens then is you will probably either sing off key, wobble or just plain cough on your notes.

Even professional singers warm up before singing.

Take a cue from them.
