Make the Most of Your Weekend Break

Weekends – they’re too short, often sweet – and most of us don’t make the most of them. But without them life really would be unbearable, so if it’s time to push the boat out and arrange a much deserved weekend break away, here are a few ideas to ensure you get the most out of your precious time.

If you’re planning on a hotel break – and, let’s face it, no one wants to cook and clean all weekend – make sure you investigate the short break offers advertised on hotel websites and in magazines. Many hotels have fantastic deals all through the year and great savings can be had with just a little research. If you can stretch an extra day out of your weekend, many hotels offer three nights for two offers, giving you more cash in your pocket and more special time away. On top of this, there are often meal offers or extra incentives thrown in for good measure, like free membership of the hotel spa or gym for the duration of your stay. So make sure you pack your costume – just in case – it always pays to be prepared.

Decide where you want to go. Are you a beach bum or do you prefer the city sights? If you want to be near shops and nightlife, make sure the hotel is actually where you think it is and is close to all amenities – especially if you’re not planning on using your car during your stay. If you intend to chill out all weekend, you could look for a hotel with a pool, or even a spa hotel. That way you’ll have the best of both worlds – great food and hospitality combined with total rest and relaxation in the spa.

For those with a penchant for tasty food, make sure the hotel has a reputation for fine wines and dining. Most hotels have their own website and you can generally get an idea from these how serious they are about their menus and the ingredients they use. If you’re going to eat in the hotel, it’s an idea to reserve your dinner table when you make your hotel booking to ensure you aren’t disappointed. And it’s one less thing to think about when you arrive.

In most hotels you can find information regarding local attractions and days out. It’s probably wise to investigate these beforehand by telephoning the local tourist information office or by going online. You really don’t want to spend the first few hours in the hotel planning what to do – when you could already be doing it! And many hotels issue vouchers to guests for reduced entry to certain local visitor attractions so it’s well worth asking about these when you arrive, too.

If you’re packing your hiking boots – and the dog – make sure your chosen hotel is pet friendly. Many are these days; mostly in rural areas where walking predominates, but you wouldn’t want to turn up and find there’s no room at the inn for your faithful friend.

Once you’ve decided when and where – make sure you know the way. Don’t get hopelessly lost and miss dinner. Plan your route and set off as early as you can. You don’t want to lose out on valuable minutes in the hotel pool!

Enjoy your weekend. As long as you’ve cancelled the milk and remembered to ask the neighbour to feed the cat, you should have a wonderful time.
