The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Cigars

The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 line is a medium-bodied smoke. Rocky Patel uses 12-year old Honduran Broadleaf wrapper along with 5-year old filler and binder, hoping that this blend of rare aged tobacco will provide the perfect balance of flavor, complexity, and richness that he seeks. The mild strength and creamy flavors are sure to please every cigar lover from novices to the most discriminating of aficionados.

Sometime in the mid-1990s, then attorney Rocky Patel was invited to get involved on the business side of one of his investments, a cigar business named Indian Tabac, and the rest is history. Patel is a self-declared perfectionist, and judging by the high quality of the cigars his company now produces, one hopes he will always remain so.

Both the 1990 and the 1992 Vintages are made in Danli, Honduras with tobacco that was meant for Astral cigars. In the mid-nineties U.S. Cigar had excessively stockpiled bales of wrapper leaf in its warehouses, which aged quietly and undisturbed until Rocky Patel discovered it and snapped it up after discovering its quality. There were two types of leaf in the stockpile: Ecuadorian Sumatra from 1992 and Honduran broadleaf from 1990.

The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is a seamlessly rolled box-pressed cigar with only a trace of veins on the silky dark chestnut brown wrapper. The tightly wrapped tobacco gives the cigar a firm feel and its texture is smooth and oily. The timeless double band of maroon and gold is a good match for this classic Rocky Patel cigar-making it a very attractive cigar.

Pre-light, the draw is a tad tight, but after lighting, the draw exhibits the perfect amount of resistance. Slow, even, and long the burn produces a firm light gray-colored ash that seems to hold on forever. Once smoldering, the Vintage 1990 produces a goodly amount of wonderfully aromatic smoke.

Pre-light or post, the aromas one gets when sniffing the foot of this cigar are what sets the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 apart; the sweet cherry and caramel notes that are a delicious treat for the nose become a pleasure to the palate with the pre-light draw.

Occasionally, some smokers experience uneven burn or harsh flavors–much, if not all of which may be attributed to the smokers being habituated to stronger cigars which can cause them to draw too hard and smoke this subtly flavored cigar too quickly. The Vintage 1990 is meant to be slowly and reflectively savored.

The predominating flavors of this popular smoke are cedar, and roasted nuts with a hint of caramel. Earthy notes also sporadically pop in and out of the flavor profile, complimenting a slight peppery spice. Some notes of cherry along with a creamy mild espresso enter the mix in the second third while the roasted nuts fade into the background. The finish itself was of medium length with some pleasing nutty tones and a delectable caramel finish.

The Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 cigar outclasses other cigars the way true Belgian chocolates surpass even the finest of American chocolates. It is not for those who prefer the knock your socks off spiciness and kick of full-bodied powerhouse cigars; rather the Vintage 1990 provides a superlatively smooth and creamy cornucopia of flavors for aficionados with a perceptive palate.
