Different Types of Men’s Swimwear
For a long time, men were very limited in their selection of swimsuits and swimwear. There was one standard style available for beachwear, indoor swimwear, and sports. In recent years however, men’s fashion options for swimwear have greatly increased.
Swim Trunks
The most popular men’s swimwear that is considered to be a staple in most men’s wardrobes are the swim trunks. While the design is usually pretty standard and simple, what makes swim trunks unique is the design on the material used. Men can choose from animal prints, solid colors, stripes, plaids, polka dots, or any other pattern or design that can be dreamt up under the sun. There can also be slight variations between suits by adding pockets or chording. Men’s swimwear also has the option of a drawstring or an elastic waistband.
The Speedo
Beyond boxer and brief swimwear that men were limited to for so long, Speedo changed the look of the market by launching skin-tight Lycra swimsuits (not just for men, but also for women). In terms of coverage, the men’s Speedo offers the least amount of coverage, with men’s swimming boxers cover a bit more, and men’s swimwear briefs offering the most amount of coverage. The small, skin-tight Speedo for men is most often favored by the die-hard swimmer as it presents the most freedom and comfort for the whole range of swimming strokes.
Racing Briefs
While men’s swimwear trunks are more popular with the causal swimmer, men’s racing briefs are preferred by the serious swimmers. These racing briefs are optimized for those racing and diving. They are designed with the need for durability in mind, especially the prolonged effects of chlorine. The material is specifically chosen because it is chlorine resistant. For the serious swimmer who practically lives in his swimsuit, he especially needs to keep in mind the harsh effect chlorine can have on material.
Board Shorts
For the casual swimmer and those who participate in water sports for recreation, the most popular choice in men’s swimwear are board shorts. This style of swimwear offers the most coverage out of all the men’s swimsuit styles as they are usually quite long, comparatively. Board shorts usually have a laced-up waistline and are also made out of polyester.
Initially, men’s swimwear were designed using cotton materials, but in recent years, men’s swimsuits are normally made out of a polyester blend as it is water resistant and therefore doesn’t become water-logged and heavy for the swimmer. This polyester swimwear often has a net lining on the inside. While the material has changed, the basic design of men’s swimwear has not. However, the options for that design have expanded from basic swimming trunks, to now also include men’s thongs and board shorts briefs.
The most prevalent style of men’s swimwear are swim trunks and board shorts as these offer the most versatility, are often the most flattering (falling anywhere from mid thigh to mid calf), and offer the owner the chance to be unique in their selection through the wide range of fabric patterns offered.
