The Process and Advantages of Aluminum Extrusion
Extrusion is a widely used process to process or manufacture anything which has a cross sectional profile. In architecture and automobiles, aluminum extrusion is much popular and is demanded world over. Aluminum extrusion is also used to build small components for machineries and also in the Airline industry for structural components, as competition is tough in there.
Aluminum extrusions have a lot of green that is environment friendly benefits apart from its other many advantages. It has low impact on the environment. Aluminum extraction is much preferred when it comes to creating and manufacturing components of complex shape for various industries like aeronautics, as mentioned earlier construction and automobiles too.
The extrusion process involves pushing aluminum through a die land i.e. the desired component shape. Mold designers face the task of making sure all sides of the shape are properly filled. The shape not being properly filled will cause bad shape and result is in an ill shaped component of no use.
The basic process of aluminum extrusion process starts by heating aluminum billets to convert them in to a malleable solid state suitable to insert. The billets are heated at a temperature of approximately 750 to 900 Fahrenheit.
The design of the product and its intended use is the first parameter that sends forward the extrusion process as many of the process steps. Also the alloy for the product depends on the design as its machinability and dependence to be used are also decided after the design.
The extrusion cost is much cheaper as the die costs lesser than any other fabrications and aluminum being strenuous and light weight supports excellent thermal and electrical properties to result in various types of finishes. This property of the extrusion makes it ideal to prepare products for space travel. Without its use space travel would be hardly possible to built bridge decks with steel which is much heavier and not possible to travel with.
Aluminum extrusion has vast advantages like flexibility to makes any kind of components that can be easy to assemble and fasten with any machinery the component is intended for. The components manufactured are attractive and seamless when viewed.
The plus point of using aluminum extrusion is that it gives the mold designers freedom of versatility and reliability for building industrial products as well as consumer products. Also, you can use extrusions to join any other pieces via welding or soldering, adhesives etc.
Aluminum extrusions also form corrosion resistant components given the oxide sheet on it and can be further enhanced given good finishing.
The reason why aluminum extrusions are used for aircrafts is that these function ever better when exposed to cold weather. Flying at high latitudes drops temperature and makes extrusions even better for cryogenic applications.
Non magnetic, recyclable, reflective, resilient and does not emit sparks are some other advantages of aluminum extrusions. Also aluminum as a metal is safer to deal with and is shock resistant and can bounce back to normal shape.
