Hair Transplant Recovery? 16 Dos and Don’ts Here

Losing hair can be a nightmare and the prospect of getting it back can literally transform your life through an increase in the level of self-esteem. Yes, getting a head full of hair is possible with this hair restoration technique, hair transplantation or also commonly known as hair transplant.

Hair transplant surgery is a cosmetic procedure to redistribute hair on the scalp by removing from areas where there is a thick growth and grafting them where the hair is thinning or bald patches are visible. It is highly successful since the surgeons carrying it out check carefully if the
patient in question is fit for it depending on his condition and general health. The success of the procedure depends on a number of factors, both pre-operative and post-surgery.

Some preparation is required before the procedure and a lot of care and caution is necessary on its completion to give the hair follicles the best chance to take root. It is advisable to get an idea about the steps to be taken after the surgery. The guidelines are always provided by the clinic selected for the procedure, and there can be minor variations in details given by different clinics. Some of the steps advised for hair transplant recovery are:

– The hair grafts are sensitive to damage and infection from external sources and therefore must be protected by keeping it loosely covered for a few days.

– The procedure is performed with local anesthesia and driving immediately is not recommended, so someone else must drive the patient back. A slight groggy feeling may stay for a few hours.

– A few medicines will have to be taken for preventing inflammation and infection. The clinic will provide details about dosage and timing. Avoid consuming alcohol with them.

– The hair cannot be shampooed for at least two days and subsequently, they have be washed with great care. The scalp cannot be scrubbed and the shampoo has to be gently patted on the hair and gently washed off with warm water.

– A hair dryer must not be used till the grafts heal completely.

– Direct sunlight and strenuous exercise need to be avoided for two weeks

– Sleeping at night has to be with a raised head propped with several pillows, in almost sitting position, to prevent swelling.

– If any swelling is noticed, an ice pack on the forehead will help to reduce it

– Scabs will appear on the graft site and will fall off, taking with them any tiny hair. This is part of the healing process.

– Surgeons permit resuming regular work the next day but with the recommended precautions.

– Any activity that may lead to blood rushing to the head must be avoided.

– Bathing with water that has chlorine in it or a swim in the ocean has to be avoided.

– Stitches, if any, in the graft area will be removed after 10 days.

– In stray cases, a little of blood is noticed on the scalp. This can be stopped by gently using very light finger pressure on the graft points.

– Scratching the head has to be avoided at all times.

– Smoking that had been stopped before the surgery cannot be resumed for a month post surgery.

Once the wounds have healed, it is best not to forget all about it because the first sign of new hair will take two-three months and it will take 9-12 months before it becomes a head full of hair. Any hair loss subsequently will be from untreated areas and not from the transplanted parts. Hence hair transplantation is the only way to restore hair loss permanently without the fear of going bald again.
