Negative Health Effects of Dust Mites and Bed Bugs

There are several negative health effects of dust mites and bed bugs. They can cause serious health issues such as asthma and severe allergies. Dust mites live in bedding that is not properly cleaned. They feed off our dead skin that shed on to our sheets. They are particularly dangerous to infants and young children as well as the elderly.

There are many people that have sensitivity to dust mites and there presence will cause a severe allergic reaction. When vacuuming, dust particles move around in the air. When this is breathed in, it causes a number of health related issues. Several toxic chemicals and other substances that are not safe to breath in are circulated in the air. Once these harmful substances are breathe or absorbed into the skin, illness may result.

The dust we find in our homes is mostly comprised of dead skin cells. It also consists of a mixture of organic and inorganic substances. Areas where people frequent the most, will have the highest accumulation of dust. Dust accumulates on furniture, bedding, floorboards and several other high traffic areas in the house. There is no way to avoid dust collecting in the house.

Families that have small children must be careful to dust regularly. Toddlers that crawl on the floor may collect dust on their hands and fingers and end up ingesting it into their mouths. This can cause a number of allergic reactions if ingested on a regular basis.

Inhaling dust over a long period of time can cause serious respiratory problems. The droppings of dust mites can be found all around the house. They are especially concentrated in our bedding and therefore are breathed in everyday. It is important to frequently wash bedding in extremely hot water to reduce the effects of dust mites.

Bed bugs are another health risk found in our homes. Bed bugs suck blood from their hosts by biting into the skin. The bed bug’s saliva can enter the blood stream of humans, causing illness. It is easy to tell if you have bed bugs. You will notices small raised bites that cover your body. Some people have severe reactions to bed bugs that may lead to anaphylaxis.

Bed bugs typically bite during the night time when we are asleep. The actual bite usually goes by unnoticed until the actual, visual manifestation is evident on the outer surface of the skin. These bites tend to itch and will become swollen. They will resemble bites such as flea or mosquitoes bites. Actual bed bug infestations can occur which pose as a serious health threat.

The negative health effects of dust mites and bed bugs can be quite serious. To help reduce the occurrence of dust mites, it is best not to have floor to floor carpeting. Hardwood floors with a few area rugs are a better option. Frequent dusting and cleaning will also help to reduce dust mites. And bed bugs are best avoided with proper and frequent cleaning of all bedding.
