Different Environments in Which Nurses Can Find Jobs

The field of nursing is so wide that it opens many doors of opportunity for nurses and the jobs that they do. If you are thinking about a career in nursing, there are many paths available that you can choose form. In this article some of these paths are discussed based on the environment in which the nurse would be required to work.

The Hospital

Majority of the persons who think of a career in nursing will tend to think of working in a hospital, but even within the walls of the hospital different nurses are responsible for carrying out different functions. For instance floor nurses have the task of dealing directly with the patients based on the directives given by the doctor. Charge nurses are responsible for supervising the nurses along with the nurses’ aid for a particular shift. There are also head nurses who have the duty of overseeing the care of the patients and the nurses that are administering the care. There are also some nurses that are required to assist doctors in the operating room, even though today, nurses in this capacity are being encouraged to receive specialized training.

Doctor’s Assistant

There are also many nurses who work in a doctor’s office or in a clinic. These nurses function a little different from those in the hospitals. They are normally responsible for making appointments, managing the flow of patients in and out of the office and also setting up referrals. So these nurses may be required to deal with the patients themselves, get the history of the patients, make a note of the vital signs and get the patient ready in the rooms for examinations.

Nursing Home

Nurses who are employed to rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and chronic care centers are basically required to work with a set of patients over a long-to-mid term basis. In addition, these nurses are likely to deal with persons who are basically okay or healing from a surgery or illness. These nurses, along with providing regular care to the patients will also be required to follow directives from doctors, dieticians and therapists in order to adequately care for their patients.

Community and Home Health Care

The number of nurses working in the field of community and home health care is expected to grow much faster than the other areas in the years to come. These nurses normally work with one patient for a long period of time. However in most cases they are responsible for visiting more than one individual. These nurses tend to have much more flexibility than nurses in other fields.

They may even get the option to choose their patients or the type of patients they prefer to administer care. Just like other nurses however, they work based on the directions of a management team or doctor and have the duty of recording vital stats, conducting medical procedures such as changing dressings, checking the progress of a wound and iv medications.

School Nurses

Finally school nurses are basically responsible for managing the health of the students; this may be in one or more schools depending on the size. Typically their job will involve delivering medication as directed by doctors and administering first aid to those who may receive injury during the days. In some cases these nurses may be required to teach on topics such as basic nutrition and health at the school.
