Tire Rotation Practices For Motorists Driver & Auto Owners

It can be said that a generation people were more thrifty. The throw away disposable product generation has arrived. In the same way often motorists think that the tires on their car need no routine maintenance and care what so ever, that is other than the odd check of tire pressures. Yet our cars, trucks and S.U.V.’s ride on rubber tires. We depend on our set of tires for not only comfort but road and driving safety and quick accurate short stops in emergency driving situations and events. Good tires and a set of premium tires are not cheap at any automotive tire store or even big box discount auto service center. On top of that add in extra costs of setting up and installing tires – that is installing tires, balancing and even fees and environmental levies for disposal of your old set of tires. You would think that most motorists would think the minor costs and time involved in servicing their tires and rims by routine tire rotation would make perfect sense. Yet think again. Are today’s motorists in 2010 uninformed about the benefits of tire rotation or are they just lazy?

Tyre rotation essentially equalizes normal tire wear. Tires do wear normally and by equalizing tire wear over the entire tread life surface, you will extend tire life on your car, truck, bus or S.U.V. vehicle. According to one tire company service tech consultant, rotating your tires every 5,000 miles will provide you with approx 20 % more mileage from each tire. Even older model rear wheel drive commercial vehicles can benefit from front wheel tire rotation practices. With rear -end older model vehicles on top of that (police cruisers for example are predominantly rear drive models), front tires undergo normal wear on their outer shoulders because of cornering maneuvers. In these situations and cases as well rear tires wear mainly in the center because of the power thrust in the rear axle.

What are the basic plans and procedures involved in tire rotation? While it can be said that the systematic movement of tires and wheels from one position to another depends on the kind of tires that you have on your vehicle there are other considerations.

If you have four tires that is one thing , but what if you have 5 full size tires as opposed to 4 and one temporary “donut ” spare ?

When what are standard tire types in 2010- radial-ply tires first arrived on the tire industry scene to auto consumers tire manufacturers recommended that they should never be cross switched but moved from front to rear to rear on the same side of the car.

However with the newer type of radial tires, which you will be sold at your local tire store or big box auto service outlet this is not a problem or concern anymore. Be reassured.

All in all it can be said that for most motorists, with most types of cars & trucks, driving in a regular and standard fashion and routine that routine rotation of the tires on their vehicles makes more than rational sense from a safety, economical and auto service maintenance viewpoints. Take the time and effort to rotate the tires on your auto as part of regular and ongoing automobile maintenance.
