Tennis Elbow Causes & Cures

Tennis Elbow is the absolute reverse of golfers elbow and is caused during the tennis game due to numerous wrongdoings.

First lets understand where the injury occurs.

In the Elbow at the joint are ligaments that join muscles to the bones. Tennis Elbow is damage to the tendons in the outer elbow area that causes extreme pain and more or less an inability to play.

It usually takes 3-6 months to cure but can be helped by several means.

First don’t bother buying straps or pressure pads, they simply don’t work. My advice is to carry on playing socially using the arm and play through the injury. Youre game wont be quite the same but exercise will help.

There are numerous causes of tennis elbow which all amount to sudden jerking of the elbow joint and tendons.

CAUSES:

– Soft tennis balls. Basically DONT use them, if you cant afford new balls every 4-6 sets of tennis you might as well stop the playing as the game will not be the same and flat balls are the number one cause of injury.

– String tension too high. Dont play with a tight string unless using new balls and using balance weights that reduce shock and twist. Tight strings are a big cause of tennis elbow.

– Don’t use a cheap frame. Frames can be made of fibreglass impregnated with many other fibers, Ceramic is a great damper of vibration. Many frames by Mad Raq are Ceramic based.

– Use balance lead style tape on sides of racquet, Best is to buy a “Head light” racquet and build the weight using weighted tape. That way you can choose the ideal weight for you and remember you should NOT “muscle” the ball, let the racquet do the work with smooth and longer strokes.

– Try to hit the ball dead centre, watch the ball onto the strings of your racquet every stroke. It is this off centre hitting that causes the twist that causes tennis elbow.

– Get a racquet with a decent size sweet spot. Test this by bouncing the ball on the racquet near the centre and gradually bounce the ball a little way out from the centre to detect racquet frame twist. Map out in your mind the oval pattern that outline the sweet spot or consistent bounce area. Then try another racquet. You will they vary a lot.

The farther out from the centre you can get without the racquet twitching or trying to twist in your hand the larger the sweep spot on the racquet. (TIP- to enlarge the sweet spot you reduce the string tension but that means less control. Using a three string racquet means you CAN use lower tensions but the extra string helps ball support and thus you get a lower string tension but a larger sweet spot.

Three string tennis racquets have been shown ( multi brand racquet shootout article in Tennis Magazine) by virtue of their three string pattern to have a “Sweet Spot” almost double the size of two string racquets. For this reason there is a great margin of error for you when striking the ball and less twist, therefore much reduced likelihood of Tennis Elbow.
