Anti Aging Face Cream – Understanding Aging
The aging process…….although distressing, is inevitable.
Every morning when we face our looking glass, the words of a famous queen echo in our minds…”Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the fairest one of all”. For a fortunate few turning back the hands of time is as easy as a little nip here, a little tuck there and some botox everywhere. The wonders of cosmetic surgery. For those without deep pockets the quest to keep a youthful, beautiful appearance is made a little easier with the help of the countless anti aging skin products available on the market. All with the promise of restoring a young complexion. The anti-aging war against mother nature is on!
To understand what is fact and what is fiction, we need to familiarise ourselves briefly with the changes which ultimately define the characteristics of an aging skin
What is it that determines a youthful look? How often have you seen someone who looks far younger than the date on their birth certificate or visa versa, someone who looks far more “mature”?
The skin is the largest and most visible organ. It has many functions. It protects us from the environment, it allows us to feel through touch, pain and pressure receptors. It helps us maintain fluid balance and regulates our bodies’ temperature. Any changes related to aging will become easily noticeable there. So what are the signs, we should all be looking for, which herald our increasing age?
To better understand these we need a brief insight into the way our skin is packaged.
Very simply it is made up of three layers: an outer layer or epidermis which contains the skin cells, various pigments and proteins, a middle layer or dermis which contains the blood vessels and nerves, hair follicles and oil glands also known as sebaceous glands, and the deep inner layer or subcutaneous layer which contains the sweat glands, a few more hair follicles, blood vessels and fat. All 3 layers are connected with 2 types of fibres made up of collagen which provides support and elastin which gives flexibility and strength to the skin.
Changes in these layers are visibly perceived as AGING.
You want to understand what happens to the skin during the aging process!
How the blood vessels under the skin giving rise to easy bruising and the appearance of little red spots called cherry angiomas. How the Sebaceous glands tend to start producing less oil causing a dry and itching skin. In women this is evident earlier than men and often begins after menopause when hormone production declines.
Along with this natural aging process various other factors play a role in determining the rate by which we age.
Genetic factors like the colour of your eyes, or the fairness of your skin may predispose you to more sun induced skin aging. Blue eyed, fair skinned people show more aging skin changes than darker skinned individuals. As far as nutrition is concerned, one word..Water!.
What does the skin require for all its vital functions?
To maintain a youthful, fresh and glowing appearance the first step to your anti-aging routine is to frequently hydrate. Yep drink lots of water. Without water the skin becomes dehydrated , it is visibly less elastic, drier with frequent peeling thus making it vulnerable and prone to wrinkling.
Aging skin is more easily injured, and aging skin tends to repair itself far more slowly than younger skin. Injuries heal slower so risk for infections and irreparable damage is higher. So we owe it to ourselves to protect the single most important barrier we have for our body our skin.
At present we can do very little to change our genetic makeup. The next best thing is to try and control some of the environmental factors mentioned above that contribute to our aging process. So after we reduce our exposure to the sun, cigarette smoke etc, we still need to deal with the signs of aging which may have already presented themselves. Armed with the information provided in the site mentioned below we can now start forming a good battle plan.
There are a number of skin-care products on the market at present all designed to protect and reverse the aging process. Which one is the right one ?
I follow a few simple rules when choosing any new product. Familiarise yourself with what is available on the market. These companies invest a lot of time and money in researching anti aging skin care. Look at the active ingredients that appear to be used repeatedly in their products, and always compare them with others.
Remember you are about to put something on an extremely visible part of your body, and you don’t want to start with just any anti aging product on your face. This is especially important to individuals who have hypersensitive skins or prone to allergies. Finally the most expensive product is not always the best…but I would also avoid a cheap fix… Look at the middle range price list and you won’t go wrong!
