Propolis Infertility: An Insight

Let us look into the details of propolis infertility and find out what it exactly is. We shall also take a closer look at fertility problems that has today become a major issue with one out of every six couples being affected by it, and try to find answers to this problem.

Birds and the bees are common examples that parents take up when explaining about sex to their children, but these parents do not understand that the same bees do much more than just gather honey for us. One important thing that the bees do is also collect a resinous substance that is known as Propolis because they know that it can protect them from diseases and from destruction too. Propolis is collected from the bark of trees, buds and from leaves. But the same Propolis can also be applied for infertility treatment with good results – at least the studies seem to think so. They seem to be most effective in the early stages of endometriosis in women. Researchers agree that Propolis can cause many pharmacological actions though exactly how it happens is as yet unknown. There is an enzyme that plays an active role in estrogen metabolism and it is known as Aromatase, and Propolis can inhibit this. Just 500 mg of Propolis taken two times in a day can improve the pregnancy rate by as much as 60% which is great considering the fact that with conventional medications the rate can be boosted by just about 20%. The studies on the benefits of Propolis on women with infertility and endometriosis established this. This is what is often referred to as the propolis infertility effect.

Not only women, but Propolis can help men too, particularly in repairing the damaged sperm, which is the most common male infertility factor. Centrifugation is a sperm preparation technique that can generate ROS or Reactive Oxygen Species can be aided with Propolis for assisted methodologies such IVF. This was observed in a study that worked with a Chilean Propolis extract on sperm that was treated with Benzo(a)pyrene along with exogenous ROS.

Studies have concluded many other positives of Propolis as well. For example, it was seen that Propolis was able to protect genomic DNA from getting damaged once the DNA was induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and Benzo(a)pyrene with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and adenosine 5 di-phosphate (ADP). It led to a reduction in the level of intercellular oxidants. Propolis the natural drug could also successfully protect the membrane of the sperm from the harmful oxidative aggression action and it could also successfully reduce the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and release LDH as well. Most studies concluded that it was actually the antioxidant ability of the extract of Propolis that could protect the sperm at least partly and thus it can play a leading role in male fertility.

But the almost magical properties of Propolis do not end with offering a remedy to infertility. It has also been seen to be great as a side effect free antibiotic in treating sexually transmitted diseases as well. Apart from working as a skin toner, it can also be used as a mouthwash and for burn injuries too. It can also increase the level of collagen and elaston, which are very important components for skin, particularly for restoring the damaged skin.

Propolis infertility effect might be good, but more research is needed at this time, and so do not be carried away yet. If you need to fight infertility, you should turn to holistic remedies and not conventional therapies, because the fact is that, the conventional approach comes with harmful side effects and the results are positive in only about 33% of all cases. All the conventional approach does is suggested assisted techniques without finding out the real cause of the problem. The holistic approach on the other hand finds out the real cause and then suggests remedies which can be Chinese medicines, herbs, acupuncture, exercise and diet and lifestyle changes to cure the situation. And this is why, holistic remedies work so well in all cases of infertility.
