He began to study under a music teacher named Tan Jianmin. One year later, he won the Chongqing Children’ s Accordion Competition,
snagging first prize. A couple of years after that, his teacher arranged an introduction with one of China’s top teachers, Dan Zhaoyi, and he studied under Zhaoyi’s tutelage for nine years. In 1994, Li was enrolled with the Sichuan Music Academy in order to train for his goal of becoming a professional pianist.

He also won top prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in the U.S. In the Netherlands, he won third price in the Franz Liszt Piano Competition. In his native China, he took second prize in Beijing’s China International Piano Competition.
Yundi Li has given multiple concerts and made many popular recordings of his music, as well. He performed at Carnegie Hall in 2003, which was his debut, and it was very well received. He played Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. He also had the honor of showing off his superior piano playing gifts for various dignitaries from the U.S. State Department. He received an award for best CD of the Year from the New York Times. He won the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition at age eighteen in 2000, becoming the youngest pianist to win.
