Why Should You Do Interval Training?
Interval Training has been one of the most popular forms of exercises among the sportsmen and others alike. While interval training is known to notably improve performance of sportsmen, it can also improve the fitness levels of an individual who may not be in to sports professionally. Interval training, by its very nature, is able to deliver excellent results safely. This happens because the high intensity workouts (that happen without oxygen) can deliver excellent results and the low intensity workouts (that happen with oxygen supply) can not only compensate for the loss of oxygen, but can also help sustain the benefits from the high intensity workouts. This is of course, assuming your personal trainer is able to design a customized workout routine for you.
Let us take a look at the various benefits that interval training brings to an individual:
First, your cardiovascular system and the heart muscles are strengthened. As you go on performing the exercise day after day, your body gradually adapts to the workouts and the resultant changes better over time. Your body develops new capillaries and develops resistance to the lactate production.
Second, alternating high intensity exercises with low intensity exercises minimizes the risk of injuries and burnouts. You can sustain injuries and burnouts if you practice sustained high intensity exercises as your body might not be able to adapt. Periods of low intensity exercises ensure that your body gets that much required breather.
Third, the American College of Sports Medicine points out that more calories can be burnt with high intensity exercises than that with sustained low intensity exercises.
Fourth, it has been observed that interval training may be great to sustain your motivation levels. Assuming that your personal trainer has added variety in your regimen and you are not required to devote a long period of time, you will most likely be able to sustain the workouts to achieve great results.
However, you also need to take a look at the safety considerations too, in order to extract the maximum benefits from interval training. It may not be ideal for a beginner to embark on a strenuous regimen as there is a likelihood of picking up an injury. Even for an experienced trainer, it is essential to vary the workout intensity intelligently because the danger of picking up an injury always lurks round the corner.
It is important not to jump into the program without a goal and a plan. Your goals are, and should be different from everybody else and your personal trainer will help you devise the right plan. Also, it is strongly recommended that you talk to your doctor about the feasibility of such exercises before you begin one.
Interval training is a great option if you wanted to leapfrog your fitness or improve your performance as an athlete. But this is a general observation and it may not be suitable for everyone. You need to find out first whether this form of exercise is suitable for you medically.
