Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Making Love

This question is perhaps the most frustrating one for sexual partners of most men. Why is it that after an orgasm during sex, the man will roll over and tend to fall asleep? Many women will attest that no matter how passionate the sexual encounters are, men always seem to fall asleep immediately after making love leaving his woman in a lurch since girls usually achieve orgasm later than men do.

To be fair, although women sometimes feel sleepy after having sex, the incomprehensible phenomenon seems much more prevalent in men. If you are a man reading this article, are you one of these guys?

One of the assumptions why this happen is because sexual acts more often than not take place at night, in a comfortable bed and is physically exhausting especially after a hard day’s work. So when the romp is over for him, the man may psychologically felt that he has done his duty and therefore roll over to have his shut-eye.

Some researches done on this subject matter using positron emission tomography or PET scans showed that in order for a man to achieve a satisfactory orgasm, he has to psychologically and mentally let go of stress and anxiety. When a person is without stress and anxiety, he is thus in a very relaxed state and this may explain the tendency of men to fall asleep after a highly charged sexual encounter.

There are also studies which documented that during an ejaculation, men release a spectrum of brain chemicals and hormones such as norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin, vasopressin, nitric oxide and prolactin. The release of these hormones, especially prolactin is associated to the feeling of male sexual gratification and thus relaxation. Prolactin also regulates the recovery time before another ejaculation. Numerous studies have shown that men with deficiency in prolactin recover faster from an earlier ejaculation.

Furthermore, it is known that we have higher levels of prolactin when we are sleeping as prolactin is highly related to our human growth hormones which we produce naturally during sleep. To push the point further, animals injected with prolactin become tired and sleepy soon after the injections. Therefore, there could possibly be a strong association between prolactin and sleep and therefore it is highly likely that the prolactin’s release during male orgasm causes guys to become sleepy.

Two other hormones released during a male orgasm is oxytocin (neuro transmitter) and vasopressin (anti diurectic) which are also related to sleep. Furthermore, the release of these chemicals also accompanies that of melatonin which is a hormone that regulates our body clocks.

In addition to being associated with sleep pattern, both oxytocin and vasopressin are also intimately involved in what is called the pair bonding. The release of these hormones during male orgasms when making love heightens feelings trust and bonding between couples which probably explains the link between sex and emotional attachment in human beings.

So as you can see, there are many possible biochemical reasons for men to feel sleepy after making love. However, no one has yet to empirically prove the exact causes of this issue. So women have better get used to their sexual partners rolling off to snooze after his orgasm because it does not look like anything will change short of a major evolutionary process.
