An Innovation In Converging Communication The Story Of Blackberry

Well maybe it won’t make your breakfast but there is precious little that the Blackberry can’t do today. A brilliant convergence of modern technology the Blackberry has changed the way we interact with each other. Developed by the Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM) in 1996 this innovative award winning product is a Personal Digital assistant (PDA)and doubles as a mobile phone, a portable media player and push email server wherever mobile internet is present or through Wi- Fi connectivity. BlackBerry is mainly a messaging phone with the largest array of messaging features and supports all websites from Ebay to Facebook through Blackberry Internet Server (BIS) which is available in 91 countries and over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile technologies. The Blackberry which had its genesis as a pager developed into the current Smartphone enriched with all sophisticated features in 2002. Today BlackBerry which commands 20.8% share of worldwide Smartphone sales is second only to Nokia’s Symbion OS. Several leading mobile players like Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericcson, Samsung, Siemens and HTC have also released phones which can ally with the Blackberry’s servers.

Blackberry garnered a stream of positive appreciation and free celebrity endorsement when it was revealed that the US President Barack Obama was a compulsive Blackberry user all through his presidential campaign and insisted on using it even after his inauguration thus being the first President of the US to use mobile e-mail.

Blackberry is a brilliant choice for those corporate jet setters who wish to keep themselves abreast of developments in the world as well as in their business while being on the move. By giving its users flexibility in work and fulfilling their business deals Blackberry has brought a revolution in the telecommunication sector.

As of June 2010 RIM has estimated about 25 million users and has sold close to 100 million units of Blackberry. Even though the Blackberry has formidable competitors in the iphone, Android and Windows Mobile, its users will swear by its utility, design security and applications.

But recently however Blackberry has dogged headlines for the wrong reasons. Blackberry’s consent to allow the Saudi Government to have access to its customer data had the Indian Government to play truant by demanding access to Blackberry’s super-secure email and instant messaging services which they claim are posing a national security threat .

Even though this points to the freedom and individual rights; today the issue of national security is second to none. RIM has been issued an ultimatum till August 31st after which BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry Enterprise Service will be shut down. Most likely RIM will give into the demand since India is a fast growing market with the number of users likely to surge and second it has already set a precedent by succumbing to the Saudi Government’s demands. But whatever be the outcome of this dilemma the Blackberry’s role in transforming technology cannot be undetermined.
