List Building and Building a Brand One Email at a Time

Are you disappointed in your blog or website? You put so much time and energy in developing it, providing quality content, building backlinks and all the rest yet you’re not making a dime online are you? Want to know how you can change that? Start list building and get to know the people who are visiting your site.

It’s simply a fact of life that unless you have caught a person who has already decided to buy an item you have for sale, that visitor is going to have to be exposed to the offer multiple times before they plunk their credit card down. If this is the first or second time they’ve seen the offer, what do you think the odds are that they’ll come back to your website when they are ready to buy? Unless they’ve bookmarked you the odds are pretty slim.

And that’s where an email list comes in. List building and email marketing best practices come in.

Check the stats for your site and see what the average page views and time on site are. If people are going to multiple pages and spending over a minute on your site then that’s a fair indicator that you have something of interest to them. Why not capitalize on that interest and offer a newsletter or site updates to your visitors. All they need to do is provide you with a name and email address and that’s the beginning of a relationship that may bring you multiple sales from the same reader.

Think about the emails you’ve signed up for. Why did you do it? Which ones to you consistently open and read and why?

The answer to those questions will typically be you wanted more information on a subject and the reason that you open and read is because you trust the source and the emails actually deliver value to you. You have developed a relationship of sorts with that website or blog.

And that’s the big advantage that a list delivers, relationship building and trust.

If you were thinking about getting a new golf club, would you be more comfortable buying it at Golfsmith.com or Nike.com or any other brand name site or would you be comfortable buying it from BobsBentClubs.com. Of course you would buy it from a brand name because you have no idea who BobsBentClub.com is.

But what if you did visit BobsBentClubs.com and discovered that it was a pretty cool golf site and offered a series of golf tips via email? You sign up and sure enough you get a tip every three or four days and it’s actually information that you can use and in fact it has helped you lower your score and improve your game.

After you’ve received 7 or 8 of these tips Bob sends you an email and in it he talks about a fantastic new putter from Nike and he invites you to the site to see his review.

Do you see what Bob has done? Bob has built his branding one person at a time. In exchange for your email address and permission to email you, he has given you value. He has developed a level of trust and expertise with you. If Bob is recommending a new putter and he has it for sale on his site you are probably not going to leave and go shopping somewhere else. You’ll buy it from Bob.

And that’s the secret to successful list building. Give before you take. Build a relationship and gain trust and that email list will become a gold mine of repeat customers when using best email marketing strategies.
