There are some people who need to see a doctor or get themselves sign in a medical program in order to stop drinking. Some opt to go to support groups and share stories with people who are suffering from the same situation. But you might also be one of those who can or know how to stop drinking alcohol on your own. If you are not one of them though, maybe these tips can help you do it on your own.

You have to start at home first. If you keep alcohol in your home, it’s better to throw those all away. If you feel that throwing them all away at once is too drastic for you, you can do it little by little. You can throw some of it, and maybe leave a bottle or two. And as time goes by, limit yourself to one bottle or can a day until such time that you can completely eliminate any alcoholic drinks in your home. It is better that way – out of sight, out of mind. Trying to eliminate alcohol in one’s life after being dependent to it for a long time is not easy anyway. It usually really takes a long time, so you do not have to hurry. One step at a time.

Set up a timetable so you have something to refer to. Also since you have decided to eliminate something from your system, you can also add something in exchange of this. Do something that you do not usually do before. Tennis, basketball, fishing, soccer or anything that can keep you busy and can divert your attention from drinking. Not only will you kick a bad habit, you can also gain a new hobby.

Since this can be a long process, you may feel that you won’t be able to get through it and think of giving up. When you feel like you are about to give up and stop, just think of the good things that you’ll gain when you succeed. Your drinking problem had already caused negative implications on your personal, social and even professional life in one way or another. You wouldn’t want your children to drift/continue drifting away from you because they do not want a drunk parent. You also wouldn’t want to miss work or deadline just because you were too drunk the other night. And you wouldn’t want to have no more friends left because you cause trouble due to your bad drinking habit. These things can never happen again only if you can stop drinking, or at least continue trying to stop.
