Health Hazards in Long Commutes

Long commutes are a part and parcel of daily life today. These commutes are predominantly to and fro from a person’s residence to his or her work place. Every week there are several people who spend between one to two hours commuting to get to their workplace. We are just talking about one way commute here. One out of three commuters complain about various problems like neck pain, high cholesterol, back pain and much more. Apart from this they also have to deal with problems like road accidents, car crashes and a lot of other problems. The stress of a long commute is not something that should be ignored as its effects could be insidious.

Longer commute time also hampers the commuter’s emotional well being as well as physical well being. People who have to commute more than thirty minutes to reach their work place are often said to be suffering from chronic fatigue that affects their productivity at their work place. They also experience lower levels of enjoyment and tend to worry much more than employee who have shorter commutes. The time spent away from family and friends, road rage bouts, loss of exercise and having to sit in one position in a confined space takes its toll on commuters.

According to a recent study it has been observed that over 30% of employees who have to travel more than ninety minutes each day to get to their work place are grappling with obesity issues where are less than 25% of employees with shorter travel period classify as overweight. This shows a strong correlation between the commute time and obesity. Long commutes also expose people to the hazards of air pollutions. The commute that we are referring to could be any type of commute, either by car, bike, train, bus or ferry or all of the above to reach the work place. Such is the effect of commuting on people today that it has become a physical and mental burden and people do not mind spending much more in acquiring an accommodation closer to their work place if possible.

Typically people opt for a longer commute is order to live in the perfect neighborhood, with the perfect house and proximity to facilities like school, library and much more. It is more of a lifestyle decision. They did not want to compromise on their lifestyle and hence end up taking perfect homes in the perfect locality, which are really far away from the central business districts and thus end up having to commute a long way to get to their workplace and back.

On the bright side, commuting does offer the commuters some benefits, especially if they enjoy their job and do not mind the commute. Long commute means loads of time on the commuter’s hand, that he or she can use to organize their day, catch up on a book that they have wanted to read, prepare oneself for the day that awaits them at work, meeting new people and saving a lot of money. It gives people a great chance to also savor their first cup of coffee while driving down to work and last but not the least it means that they still have a job that pays them.
