Every parent wants their child to be successful in everything that they do – regardless of whether it is at school, the playground or even the drama or music class. It is every parent’s dream to have a child who is versatile and can perform. On their part, they are willing to provide all the added impetus that the child may require. Extra classes, tutorials and even special training – there is nothing the parent will stop at to give the child all the encouragement they need.

There are lots of children who need special care and attention with their studies. The attention received at school is sometimes inadequate, and children need a little more guidance to help them cope. This is also needed for children who are very good at a particular subject, and need exposure beyond what is taught to them in class. Tutorials for children have become extremely common today.

For most subjects including history, science and even geography, the need is more to understand and be able to commit to memory, for Math it’s more than just that. For one, Mathematics is a subject which is built upon at different levels as the child grows. If the basics of the topic have not been understood completely, the child will be unable to cope or add to the existing knowledge with time. It will also become impossible for the child to grasp the more complex nuances as he grows.

Mathematics has underlying principles which must be understood completely. It is not about committing to memory or just learning by rote. Other subjects allow you to simple learn by rote something you cannot understand or grasp entirely. There is no scope for this in Mathematics. It is important that the tutor and the student have both completely understood the concept before they can move on to something else.

In most other subjects, you have the liberty of omitting something which you believe is beyond you. This is impossible as far as mathematics is concerned. If you have let it go, you may be able to get by immediately, but in the future you will not be able to understand larger and more complex applications. Mathematics requires a lot of dedication and practice, both from the student and the teacher.

As a tutor of mathematics, you must be thorough and have a complete hold on the subject. Often, you will find queries which you are not prepared to handle, and if your knowledge is only superficial, you may not be able to do justice in answering them. As a Mathematics tutor, you must be passionate about the subject and willing to go beyond what is prescribed in the books. This is what will help you generate interest in the student and allow them to build an interest in the subject, and allow them to enjoy it better. The task of the tutor is not merely to improve the performance of the student, but to help them enjoy the experience studying.
