Real Nappy Preferences

In a recent article, we’ve already given you a brief introduction to reusable nappies and now it is time to consider what factors to take into account when purchasing a real nappy bundle.

First off consider your own preferences and habits. This may seem a little obvious or even irrelevant, but experience tells us it is important to choose a real nappy system that you will find rewarding to use. Consider your own personality and habits – what are you most likely to get on with and stick with?

Different people find different aspects of their cloth nappies rewarding – Will you enjoy knowing that your whole real nappy kit cost you under £300 or will you revel in your nappies being the newest, coolest thing around? As with any product, the latest designs and technology costs money. Of course sometimes it is worthwhile to spend that bit more and you really do get what you pay for.

Will you love being able to use the same set of nappies for your baby from birth to potty, or will you marvel at the neater fit of multi-sized nappies? One size nappies such as the new Itti Bitti Tutto is a snap-in-one nappy that has spent over a year in development and has already proved a big hit in Australia. It is available at Bumfluff Babies from £17.50, which is a great price, but it does mean it isn’t the cheapest nappy available.

Multi-sized nappies tend to be cheaper as you will need to replace them as your baby grows. The Bitti Boo costs a respectable £13.00 (also from Bumfluff) but this is because you will need to replace them as your baby grows rather than it being an older design. In fact the Bitti Boo is also new and it is a gorgeous shaped nappy is super absorbent, quick drying and squishably soft! They are the ultimate absorbent nappy, ideal for overnight or for any heavy wetting baby, offering superior absorbency combined with a super-trim fit, plus they are soft and stay that way after washing even in hard water AND they’re quick to dry.

Will bold, bright colours or cute prints make you go gooey or will it be white and fluffy? Is quick and convenient going to be what keeps you going after a broken nights’ sleep or will you enjoy learning a bit of origami and folding nappies “just so” for your baby? Does the simplicity of having one type of nappy in your nappy kit appeal to you or will you enjoy choosing from a selection of different nappies to suit each particular occasion?

All too often the cheapest birth to potty nappy kit available on the high street does not win the day. As a result of buying these kits parents stop using their cloth nappies because of leaks and poor fit. Whilst these systems undoubtedly suit some families, they don’t suit all.

The best advice is to try a few types of nappies before you commit to buying. Pick the ones that you think are right for both you and your baby. You can then consider all the different colours and patterns when you find a system you like! Experience tells us that choosing a real nappy system that you will find rewarding to use for whatever reason is one of the most important factors in terms of sticking with them.
