How Important is a Cell Phone to You?
Recently I was asked, “What would you do without your cell phone?” I replied, “I can’t even imagine!” Growing up, we had one phone attached to the dining room wall! One phone for seven people (my parents and us five girls – yes I said five girls!) to use whenever we needed to. Of course, there were house rules for us girls that we couldn’t talk for more than five minutes at a time and never after 8 p.m. Those rules were not to be broken or serious consequences would occur. My Dad would come over and take the phone from us and hang it up. This was totally embarrassing! Since those childhood days, my phone usage has dramatically increased. Today we have four extension phones in our home and three cell phones between my husband and me! Seeing this in writing gives me pause! Why would two people in one home need seven phones between them?
Yesterday was a prime example! My friend called me on my cell phone and I knew we would visit a while, so I ignored the call, thinking I would call her on my home phone. I was home and monitoring my cell phone minutes. Before I could call her back, she was calling my home phone. She was calling from her cell phone to alert me that her husband had just had a heart attack and was on his way to the hospital via ambulance! I promptly got in my vehicle and headed to the hospital to sit with her while she waited as they worked with her hubby. While waiting with her, I texted our mutual friends to pray and they did.
Since those early childhood days to now, it seems like each hour is whirling by at breakneck speed. We’re busier than we’ve ever been, rushing from work to ball practice, then thru the fast food lane, to a quick stop at the grocery store only to head home completely exhausted, while still needing to ensure homework is finished. The next day we start the frantic cycle all over again. Of course, we can’t imagine life without cell phones!
I love the smart phones! It’s totally awesome to be able to check my emails, twitters or face book updates anywhere at any time. I can adjust my calendar appointments while searching for the closest Italian restaurant via the browser which makes my life so much easier. Composing my shopping list thru Upvise and being able to share that list with my husband is a huge time saver. I can video my precious grandchildren, check the weather forecast and even read the Bible with my smart phone! Each moment saved is a treasure! Smart phones make living in the fast lane a little more tolerable! The smart phone is a great tool that enables me to keep organized as well as stay in communication with anyone we choose, no matter where they are!
Last year, before a trip to France, my husband made sure that I had a smart phone to carry with me, so I could stay connected to him, even though I was thousands of miles away. I was so grateful that he cared enough about me to make that happen!
Cell phones don’t yet perform miracles, but they provide the means for us to stay in touch with those who matter the most to us. To that, I say, “Thank you, God, for this awesome technology!”
