Schwinn Airdyne Upright Exercise Bike – 5 Ways Better?

I’ve owned and used a Schwinn Airdyne upright exercise bike for twenty plus years. And I bought it used. It sits right here beside my computer table ready to go at a moment’s notice. All these years, I’ve paid no gym fees or had to drive anywhere to exercise. It’s been totally reliable and here’s why I like it still. The AirDyne model has been around for about forty years as a design and with that long time in production, it’s for sure that the machine has plenty of competition today. Here are reasons the machine still is a seller after all that time.

1. The dual action.

See, you’re working both your upper body and your lower body too. The real trick to long-term weight control is to keep your rate of metabolism up. The way to do that is to keep your muscles built up. Using a machine like this is a great way to maintain muscle with no danger of that weight lifter look. Pump and pedal to more fat burned, even if you’re just sitting around. Also working the major muscle groups is the most efficient way to progress as well.

2. Fan resistance.

All you do to get more resistance and load is pump and pedal faster. Of course you’re stirring up near gale force winds as you really get with it. It’s really sort of fun stirring up all that air. It’s a great way to keep cool on hot days too. Not doubt, you also get plenty of noise as a result of that big fan too.

3. Stable ride.

I’ve ridden many other bikes, including both uprights and recumbents that were quite expensive. Most of those like to rock and sway under load. Not too bad, but some moving all the same. The Air dyne on the other hand is rock solid. It’s a simple heavy steel frame and it just sits there as you work away. It’s a stable platform often used in health clubs and gyms. It has that professional equipment feel.

4. No electronics.

What??? Electronic drives may be silent and programmable, but who needs it? Well, the electronics can be a real plus for fighting boredom. That’s true since you get the simulated workouts to mix things up. Here’s the problem… All that electronics is subject to fail and then you’re looking at big repair bills or a dead bike. It’s good as long as it lasts, but I like the Airdyne simple design with none of the electrical gizmos.

5. No maintenance.

That’s what I’ve had after twenty years. My machine has a few battle scars and it could use one new pedal. But that’s about it except for a few batteries for the electronic timer. It’s a simple, rugged machine that just does what it’s designed to do.

My Schwinn Air-Dyne exercise bike continues to work perfectly after all these years of hard use. Schwinn doesn’t get much repeat business on this model. One’s probably all you’ll ever need. The one I have probably is going to outlast me…
