What to Put on Your Resume

It is important to keep your resume short, but at the same time also provide enough information to get someone to contact you for an interview. Although there are many sections that you can add to your resume, what will follow below are the most important parts of information to share with your potential employer. It should just be enough so that the recruiter will invite you for that interview.

The first section of your resume should include your personal details such as your name, address, telephone and email address. Although you can also include your date of birth and nationality, it is not necessary. Where possible, leave out your religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity and any other information that is not required for the interviewer to be aware of.

In this section you can also include your career goal. Try and put into a couple of sentences what you want to accomplish in the next phase of your career. This can be for example get project management experience. This will obviously very different from person to person, but the recruiter will get a good idea of where you want to go in the future and what you want from your job.

If this will be your first job, and you do not have any previous work experience, do not mention anything about previous work experience. If you have any work experience, start with the most recent experience first. Mention the names of the companies you have worked for, the time you were with them and what your job title was. In addition to this include a short description of your main responsibilities in the job.

Also if you have any additional trade qualifications or certifications, awards from college, skills you’ve obtained through hobbies – list them in an awards/qualifications section. Put the most impressive awards at the top.

if you do not have any formal education, do not list anything in the education section. Just skip the whole part. If you do have any qualifications, list the most recent at the top and then continue from there. Mention the name of the school or institution, and also what you studies, what level of qualification you got and the grades you obtained.
Do not go as far back as primary school, as this is irrelevant. Even if you have some proper work experience and college diplomas or university degrees, it is not necessary to mention the grades you got in high school. Also if you do not have any proper work experience, be sure to include more detail about the different courses you have studied, mention the specific highlights and any good grades you obtained.

The last part of you resume should contain all your references. These references need to include at least the details for 2 professional people that can supply a work of character reference for you. Make sure that you include their names, job titles, the company names or the school/university/college, should you not have any work experience. You should also provide contact details for them.
