Law – Different Facets and the People Who Enforce Our Laws

Law. This single word encompasses so many facets and elements that it would take volumes to accommodate it all. The law is there to protect us as citizens. And we can break the law unknowingly only to find that ignorance of the law is not an extenuating factor and we need to face our dues. As such, a certain amount of knowledge of the law is important.

Sooner or later, we all run into a situation which requires us to seek the assistance of an attorney. It could be for divorce, to draw up a prenuptial contract, to register a company or closed corporation or for litigation reasons.

Attorneys tend to concentrate on practicing either litigation or conveyancing for people purchasing houses or buildings. They may specialise as defense attorneys or on the other hand, refuse defense matters, working only for plaintiffs.

Policemen so often despised, are very necessary to keep citizens safe in their beds at night. They are poorly paid in most countries and you could very well look at their work as a calling. Finding themselves in hazardous situations often, they need to have a good working knowledge of the law. Not only that, but they need to hone communication and negotiation skills to keep the peace and bodily strength in order to apprehend criminals.

Traffic police are not only there to hand out parking tickets, but also with traffic violations of every kind. The edges where they blend in with the normal police force are sometimes blurred, especially when it comes to fatal accidents which are sometimes marked off as crime scenes. Traffic police are also responsible for the apprehension of drunk drivers who can become very difficult indeed and often need to be incarcerated at least until they are sober.

There are many different laws which cover aviation for example, heavy transportation, licenses, fishing permits and marine laws. There are laws to protect innocent children from all kinds of abuse and for pets as well. There are building laws which have to be followed or we would have structures encroaching on one another, collapsing or blocking out views, for example.

Municipal or County by-laws are also important. These monitor the keeping of overly-aggressive dogs, incessantly barking dogs, forbid farm animals and perhaps the keeping of live poultry in an urban area. They protect the times your neighbor is permitted to mow his lawn or have a noisy party and the times there should be peace and quiet in your neighborhood.

The law comprises justice courts, advocates and judges, prisons, attorneys, policemen, detectives, forensic experts, homicide-profilers, protective services, welfare (either social or child welfare), county or municipal bylaws, avionic laws, fishing laws, rules of the road, health laws, school rules, gambling laws, cycling, racing and even television licensing. Whether we are making legal claims to protect our rights, the welfare of our children, to get relief from being treated unfairly at work or during our daily lives, the law is absolutely essential and without it, our world would be nothing but chaos.
