A Look at Cargo Nets

When people think of cargo nets, they often picture a busy dockyard with a ships crane lifting a straining net out of it’s hold and over to the dockside. Or they may picture a movie where a cargo plane has it’s rear door open and there are pallets of goods with netting holding them in. While that’s as far as a lot of people’s knowledge of these nets goes, there is a lot more to them than meets the eye.

To start with, they are used in many more applications than we would have normally associated them with. Often they have uses that people wouldn’t realize unless they were shown. Good netting systems can be set up as space dividers, or used to hold items in a smaller vehicle like your pick up truck.

It all depends on how good the set up is for fastening the nets in place. Some fasteners have a tendency to break very easily. Whereas there are some that are in a similar design to a rock climber’s carabiner they are not always as well built. Inferior materials that are susceptible to wear are common.

There are lots products that are made from good strong strapping but there are some that are stitched at the joins better than others. The actual straps are not the part that tends to give it’s more often where they are connected to each other to form a web. The method of stitching is vitally important and many products let themselves down at this point.

There are also issues with some of the nets designs where they are made so that the carabiner is connected to the straps and not specially designed connections. With a correct design for the connection of carabiners or their equivalents cargo is secured much more stable and securely.

A good system also allows for adjustment of the strapping so that you don’t have to improvise and in turn compromise the design. With an adjustment made easy the nets of choice would have more uses than something could be compared to a makeshift solution.

The load rating on different products is also important as something which appears to the eye to be secure could actually be a danger. Things can appear to be secure but it’s hard to imagine the forces that are applied during the transportation of goods or materials. Unless something is secured properly untold damage could be caused.

When calculating the working load limit, the figure is worked out by going to the breaking point of the netting and then dividing by three. This is a method used by the best manufacturers of cargo nets and one that can be sure to save many companies in their costs and also their insurances. So if you are looking for some netting to meet your needs, make sure you choose some that have good materials and are connected in a very good way. Lastly, make sure they are tested properly too, because you don’t want to find out the hard way.
