Fun Things to Do in San Diego’s Balboa Park

There are many well-known San Diego attractions to consider when planning a visit to the popular Southern California city. Whether you are in the city for business or pleasure, or even if you’re a local that needs to entertain out-of-town visitors, there’s little danger of running out of things to see. One of the best places you could go — especially if you like the outdoors — is Balboa Park.

Although there are plenty of attractions to see, Balboa Park is unique in that it offers a lot of diversions to keep you and your guests busy. Here is a list of the various must-see attractions for anyone that visits the park.

Even tourists that don’t consider themselves “trekkies” will enjoy an afternoon in the Star Trek exhibition. It contains all the original costumes, props and sets from the original 1960s television series and Star Trek feature films. Another bonus is that when you buy your admission ticket, you will also get access to all the regular exhibits in the Air and Space Museum as well.

Balboa Park is also home to many of San Diego’s best museums. You can spend an entire weekend just going to the museums if you wanted! However, if your vacation only allows time for seeing one institution, then head over to the Timken Museum of Art for the colorful kimono exhibit. The kimono is among the most distinctive costumes for any culture in the world, and you won’t find a better display of the beautiful silk robes anywhere else outside of Japan.

If flowers and plants are more to your taste, then the poinsettia display will top your list of San Diego attractions. The floral display can be found in the Botanical Building and features more than five hundred poinsettias. The Botanical Building is an amazing attractions filled with plant wonders from all over the world. Not only is the flower and plant museum completely free, but the water fountain at the front entrance is one of the most photographed objects in all of San Diego.

Have you heard about the internationally-famous zoo in San Diego? Then no doubt it’s already on your list of places to visit. For the best experience, arrive early in the morning. Not only will you avoid some of the crowds, but the animals will be more lively before the heat of the day sets in. One of the most unique things to see in the San Diego Zoo is the Panda Research Station. The line for the pandas is almost always long so head there first and beat the rush.

If you are searching for IMAX film among the San Diego attractions, then Balboa Park is just the ticket you’ve been looking for. The films at the IMAX theater are shown on a seamless dome screen making every adventure larger than life. Depending on when you visit you may find an educational film about animals, under-ocean creatures or natural phenomena like volcanoes. Sometimes the IMAX even shows feature films that are currently running in the theater – imagine seeing Avatar on a three-story screen!

You may have a long list of other San Diego attractions that are worth seeing, just be sure to save at least a few days of your vacation for exploring Balboa Park and all the sites it has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.
