You would imagine that finding a sperm donor in the United Kingdom would be a relatively easy process, wouldn’t you? Well you would actually be wrong. Sadly for thousands of couples who need to use the services of a sperm donor in order to realise their dream of parenthood, finding a sperm donor to actually help them is a hard process. This seems very odd when you remember that half the population has the capacity to make sperm and millions of men are over the age of eighteen.

To illustrate this look at the figures taken from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) from 2008, these show that only a meagre 384 new sperm donors were registered during the whole of the year, (just more than one a day!) as opposed to nearly three a day for egg donors, who had 1,084 new registrants. If we look at a typical cross section of 100 couples trying to conceive a baby, 20 will naturally conceive within one month. By six months, 70 couples will have conceived and after a year this figure will have risen to 85 couples. Two years after commencement 95 couples will have managed to conceive naturally. The remaining 5 couples will not be able to conceive without the aid of some kind of infertility medical treatment.

Obviously the reasons why couples fail to conceive are numerous. Forty to fifty percent of these couples find that the problem lies with the male partner. As a result many couples end up having to find a sperm donor in order to have any chance of having a family.

Single women who wish to stay unattached but start a family also find themselves looking to find a sperm donor. This is also the case with lesbian couples. Hence the demand for sperm donors is acute and this is why many people find themselves trying to find a sperm donor with no success as demand outstrips supply.

These sites cater for those sperm donors who are formally registered with the HFEA and those who are in the process of thinking of offering sperm donation. Hence prospective parents can chat and discuss with potential donors the idea of helping each other out. And with the lack of new registrants in the HFEA this option could prove to be one of the easiest and most definitely quickest ways of finding a sperm donor in the UK.
