The Bottled Water Trend- Has the Consumer Changed?

Drinking water, in the past, for many people, could have seemed like the last choice in a string of available beverages on the market. For many bottled water was associated with those on a strict fitness regime or for people who are on a calorie controlled diet.

Many people did not know the health benefits associated with drinking water until recently, so the end user for bottled water has changed dramatically over the past ten years.

No longer is the image of an exceptionally fit person pictured when thinking about bottled water, now purchasing a bottle of water from a shop instead of a can of fizzy drink is considered quite normal and definitely healthier.

The average person’s body is made up from around 60-70 per cent water, from this statistic alone it would be clear that a regular intake of water is essential to keep the body functioning to the best of its ability.

Contrary to popular belief drinking tea, coffee or cold fizzy drinks can have no benefit on thirst and does not have the same effect that drinking a glass of water instead.

It has to be said thanks to specific media campaigns and television adverts, drinking bottled water has become much more glamorous, opening the market for buying bottled water open to more consumers.

With this in mind it’s not just the gym addict or serial dieter opting for water, consumers of all ages and backgrounds are opting to buy a bottle of water as part of their daily routine.

Nowadays everyone has access to the internet and the relationship between water and technology although maybe not immediately obvious has had a massive effect on the consumer. Researching health issues and advice is something that millions of people look for on the web on a daily basis so finding out the facts and figures relating to the benefits of drinking water are much easier than before.

In addition to this, more work places are offering free bottled water to their employees in a drive to consciously encourage more water intake, in turn improving the health of their staff. So with this in mind it would appear that rather than reaching for a coffee during the working day many workers from all ages are filling their classes with bottled water.

The industry has grown rapidly over the past ten years and is likely to continue to increase year on year with the clever marketing and readily available information to the average person.

With a lot of media attention on young people and the binge drinking culture, young people are advised to consume as much water as possible, making it more of a trendy accessory to carry around. Tests have proved that people suffer from hang-overs purely because of the lack of water in the body and by drinking water regularly when consuming alcohol or having a bottle of water before you go to bed can dramatically decrease the chances of a hang-over.

Overall the shift over the years has seen the consumer go from the occasional buyer to a frequent purchaser of bottled water. The image of water has been made sexy and is now more assessable everywhere, especially in the work place.

The future looks bright for bottled water and is definitely the way forward for healthier living not just for the keep fit addict but for the average person and with the variations now available on the market such as flavoured or sparkling water, grabbing a bottle of water is just as trendy, if not more, than reaching for your usual can or pop.
