How to Have an Enjoyable Budget City Break in Prague

Why are you reading this? I don’t know. But whether you just want grea value for your hard earned money, or you really need to budget hard on your city break, you have come to the right place. This article will give you some very useful tips on how to enjoy a cheap city break in Prague.

First of all, dining and drinking. It will be very cheap for you to do this in Prague. The beer is delicious and when the bill arrives you are likely to not pay more than 2 or perhaps 3 euros if it’s a really fancy place. Burgers and pizza meals at middle-of-the market restaurants are not likely to cost you more than 5-6 euros. I am quoting the prices in euros, but of course, there are czech korunas you will pay with when you are in the Czech capital.

Transportation is also dirt cheap in Prague, the metro costs next to nothing. But word of advice, avoid the taxis, they are known to overcharge naive tourists and you really don’t need them either. Prague has a compact city centre, and the metro will take you all the places where you want to go.

When it comes to hotels, there’s another story with Prague. Compared to the cost of dining and transportation, hotels can be surprisingly expensive. The average 3-star hotel will come in at about 50-75 Euros. Many of the hotels will include a small European style breakfast buffet in the price of the room. Be cautious about hotels that claim they are close to the center. Always double check the location with Google maps before booking a room to ensure that your version of close and the hotels version of close are one in the same.

Coming to Prague on a budget most likely means you will be staying in a slightly ugly hostel. The number of backpackers coming through the city means there are plenty of options for travelers. Booking a bed in a group room will average between 15 and 20 Euros depending on the location and the size of the room. Many hostels also offer private rooms for less than the price of staying in a hotel. Oftentimes the hostels are even closer to the downtown area than the hotels.

The most expensive time of year for accommodation is the summer months between mid May and mid September. Shoulder season is generally from March-Mid May and again from mid-September until the end of October. The low season, which in turn means the cheapest rooms, runs from November until March, excepting Christmas and New Years, when prices are often higher than summer rates. As a rule of thumb, prices are highest between Easter and Halloween.

So, when all that accommodation stuff is sorted, what do you do next? Many museums are free, or very cheap, so dive into the world of culture. Word of caution though, avoid the erotic museum which is a major tourist trap.

If you are visiting in a weekend, be sure to watch a match of Czech footie, Sparta Prague is the big team in town.

I hope this info will come in handy when you visit Prague. It’s great city to spend some time in, enjoy your stay.
