Puerto Calero on Lanzarote is blessed with a world class marina. Around the marina it has grown into a great resort with luxurious infrastructure, high-end shopping, and tasty restaurants.

Puerto Calero is a small resort on the Southeast coast of Lanzarote. There are two hotels in Puerto Calero: the four-star Iberostar Costa Calero and the five-star Hespero Lanzarote. Most people, however, come here for the marina – either because they are part of the crew of a sail boat or for a day trip. As the marina was planned with luxury yacht owners in mind, the general standard of the facilities is high. Everything is clean and well-maintained and there’s a 24-hour security service. With one exception, the cafes, bars and restaurants along the seaside promenade are quite reasonably priced.

It is very quiet and relaxed

Apart from the super-rich, Puerto Calero tends to attract people who want a quiet and relaxed holiday. Among the day visitors, there are many families who arrive by coach. Often these day trips are organised by hotels in other resorts of the island. The large terrace in front of the old marina building is ideal for children to play and run around without getting too close to the water. Many people visit the marina to go for a meal by the sea, but there are also a few leisure activities which attract day visitors.

Lanzarote has a very desirable climate

The Canary Islands are often referred to as the islands of eternal spring. With over 300 sunny days a year and average temperatures of 17 degrees Celsius in January and 24 degrees in August, it’s easy to see where the nickname comes from. The wind comes from the north most of the time, only occasionally it turns to easterly directions. When that happens, hot air and sand from the Sahara travel to Lanzarote. I experienced this phenomenon, called Calima by the locals, when I was in Puerto Calero in March 2010. Within 24 hours, the temperatures rose from a pleasant 24 degrees to 32 degrees and the sand in the air turned the sky yellow. When the wind turned again, it cooled down and the the blue skies returned.

But, not everything is well in Puerto Calero. Don’t go to the Irish pub McSorley’s in the evenings. It was highly overpriced for the quality of food they served and whatever they do to their Guinness, it makes it taste horrible. As we were there in March over St. Patrick’s Day, McSorley’s was our preferred choice for a pint of the black stuff and some fish and chips. The latter had sold out and our alternative choices weren’t convincing. My companion’s beef pie was overcooked, my sea-food salad came without prawns and was rather on the small side. And the worst thing: The Guinness tasted rank.
