Patio Trends

Just because we’re moving into the Fall season doesn’t mean that you can’t still be concerned with the look and feel of your patio. While it’s certainly easy enough to just through some furniture out on a back patio or deck area and call it a day, there are emerging trends in patios that are worth paying attention to if you really want to get the most out of the area.

Elaborate Patios

Gone are the days of a slab of concrete with some plastic chairs and a card table. Hand laid stone and brick have replaced poured concrete as the preferred material for patios. Not only have the materials been upgraded, but the size of patios has too, with many taking up a significant portion of a home’s backyard.

With better materials and more space on the patios, more homes are also better equipping their patios for entertaining purposes. Bars, elaborate grills, fire pits, and other accessories have turned the patio from a place to keep a few chairs to a place to host an upscale party.

Stylish Furniture

Gone are the days of plastic furniture. Teak, metal, and wicker and amongst the materials being used to create patio furniture. High end cushions that can hold up against the elements with contemporary patterns and designs are making patio furniture something to brag about instead of hide in a shed unless absolutely needed.

Coupled with furniture coming out from some of your top designers of indoor furniture, and it’s no surprise at the increase of furniture styles often associated with indoors, including chaise lounges, large couches, and big comfy chairs.

Four Seasons Patio Use

There’s a definite trend in making patios useful for extended periods of the year. Screening in patios in conjunction with fire pits or heating units can allow you to enjoy your outdoor area even when there’s snow on the ground. Even without screening in your patio, the careful application of awnings, patio furniture covers, and heating units can allow you to make use of your patio area well into the Fall months or earlier in the Spring months.

More Than Just a Slab Out Back

These are just a few of the trends being found in patios. That’s not to say that these are all the trends you’ll see, and trends will certainly vary from place to place, but don’t forget that you can always set your own trend. Making your patio furniture an extension of your home instead of just a slab taking up some of your backyard is a great way to increase the value of your home, both to yourself and to any potential buys if you choose to sell your home down the line.

Taking the time to upgrade your patio can be time consuming, but in the long run, the time, effort, and money you put into it will be paid back to you time and again when you’re out there enjoying the space with family, friends, or just by yourself.
