It is true in many instances that most of us run screaming when we see anything creeping or crawling towards us, even if it is minute in size! Even grown men go all pale and wobbly when they see a spider in the bath and we all run crazy when we see a cockroach. However, there are many ways to keep the numbers of these bugs down if we all take some time in preparing our homes and gardens.

Roaches are perhaps the most predominant of pests and they seem to survive every onslaught against them. Indeed, it is said that should we be unfortunate enough to go through a nuclear holocaust, it is only these horrible little creatures that will survive. Such is their tenacity they will actually survive for up to nine days if they lose their heads! Add this to the ability to grow back a leg or two when they lose them and one can see how great they really are.

But these creatures also have some rather bad manners too. Apart from the fact that they live right in our food cupboards, crawling all over what we are about to eat, they also have a cannibalistic tendency which allows them to eat dead roaches when they come across them. Of course, this works in our favor since once they have been killed by man-made poison, the subsequent feasting means that several other roaches will be taken down to. The knock on effect only helps with our ever raging battle to get rid of them!

Considering that one female breeding session can produce around thirty-five thousand eggs one can see how infestation happens very fast. Indeed, a breeding female produces around two million eggs in one year. Time for the experts to get involved here one would think!

Along with these distasteful creatures, ants too, have some rather magnificent attributes to other ants that is! They can actually carry up to two hundred times their own body weight and worker ants exist solely to feed the nest. These have two stomachs, one for themselves and the other to carry food to the nymphs and queen in the nest itself. What a way to get organized!

Of course, many ants have that nasty habit of stinging us too. They do this by squirting out acid from the end of their abdomen and although it does not kill us, it can be downright uncomfortable when they give us a squirt or two. Many people try out the old remedy of spreading dry ashes around the outside of the house because it is though that the ants do not like to cross this barrier. However, as with most cases, if infestation is a problem, it may be better to just call in the experts to have a go at them once in a while.

Finally, if anyone is tempted to try to sort out these pests themselves, remember that many of the chemicals are highly toxic and can damage children, fish and other pets too.
