How to Recognize an Infestation

While a lot of people think bugs in the home are a sign that housekeeping is less than stellar, the truth is anyone can end up with an infestation. Sometimes bugs are attracted to food scraps or trash, but other times the infestation has nothing to do with these things, like with termites. If you are concerned about bug problems developing, you can stay on top of things by knowing what to look for. You may not be able to avoid an infestation completely, but if you know what to look for, you should be able to catch it early enough that it will not cause serious problems.

One of the easiest ways to know if you have an infestation is seeing the bugs. If you are sitting in your living room or basement and fruit flies are bothering you, chances are pretty good your kitchen has an infestation. They may be hovering around the drain or the garbage can, and once there are enough of them, they head out into the rest of the house to see what they can find. Usually emptying the garbage or cleaning the drain is enough to handle the problem, but it will take a couple of days for all of the tiny flies to die off. In the meantime, you will need to be vigilant about blocking their access to food. You may need to scrub your garbage cans and recycling bins too, in order to alleviate the problem.

Another sign of infestation is the evidence the bugs leave behind. If you open your pantry and notice boxes have been nibbled or crumbs are spilled for no reason, there is a chance you are dealing with pests. For smaller pests, you can usually clean out the space, toss food that has been damaged and alleviate the problem. If you are dealing with larger insects like roaches or other pests like mice, you may need a professional to fix the problem.

If you have pets in the house, they may respond to the infestation. In cases where the bugs are really tiny and have little to do with pets, this may not work as an indication. For instance, a dog or cat is unlikely to alert you to the fact that you have termites. However, if your pet has to dodge fruit flies to get to their food bowl or they can hear critters moving around in the pantry or cabinets, they will react.

In some cases you are going to see serious damage from the pests and know there is a problem once the damage is well on its way. If you are purchasing a new home, speak with a professional inspector or exterminator who can help you know what to look for in potential homes. If you discover your home is infested with an unwanted pest collection, contact a professional exterminator to remedy the problem as soon as possible. This way you can save yourself a lot of money and frustration, and prevent future problems from occurring.
