Five of the Best – Vegetarian Restaurants in London

Plenty of London restaurant offer a vegetarian option these days, so for vegetarians, eating out in London is certainly less challenging than it was a couple of decades ago.

However, if you don’t want to be faced with a jaw achingly boring vegetarian afterthought, check out a few specialist vegetarian restaurants that will set you taste buds alight on a trip to the capital.

Manna Restaurant
Located in London’s leafy Primrose Hill, Manna has been turning out its gourmet vegetarian and vegan cuisine for more than 40 years, so they are hailed as something of experts in the field and the restaurant is understandably very popular.

At Manna, the emphasis is on using top quality and socially responsible ingredients; they prepare their food freshly each day and even make a range of organic cakes and breads.

You’ll find dishes that are creative and varied, with everything from an Indonesian inspired Satay through to good old Organic Banners and Mash, with fennel and pumpkin sausages.

Rootmaster Restaurant
Rootmaster is the place to head for a funky dining experience, because this vegan restaurant in the Brick Lane area of London operates from an old converted brewery and the dining room is actually a restored London red double- decker bus!

The ‘bustaurant’ has an open plan kitchen on the lower deck, so diners get a free show as they sit and wait for their food. If you’re keen to snatch a veggie meal on the run, check out the Rootmaster hatch for a takeaway service.

Expect to find globally inspired vegetarian cuisine, from a Stir Fry or and Kofta to the ever comforting Nut cutlet and Roasted Veg.

Vanilla Black
In the East End of London, is Vanilla Black, a spacious restaurant with a stylish art deco themed interior.

The Vanilla Black team pride themselves on cooking not just any old vegetarian food, but on truly meeting the challenge of cooking without fish or meat. As a consequence, you’ll quite likely see things on this menu that you haven’t come across before, such as Asparagus and Chervil Pesto Crumpet or a Poached Duck Egg and Ribblesdale Pudding.

You might even catch a glimpse of celebrity veggies here – Joanna Lumley has already given them top marks.

Woodlands Piccadilly
Indian restaurants are renowned for offering a good range of vegetarian meals, but for a really inspired choice, why not try Woodlands restaurant in central London’s Piccadilly?

Over the years, they have specialised in South Indian cuisine, but have now extended their range to offer dishes from the north of India. There is a dedicated Tandoor oven menu, with delicacies including Paneer Tikka and Vegetable Seekh Kebab, plus a sizeable selection of vegan dishes too.

Zilli Green
In trendy Soho, is Zilli Green, which was launched by Award-winning Italian chef and restaurateur Aldo Zilli. Head chef is Enzo di Marino, one of the UK’s most exciting up-and-coming vegetarian chefs and he has put together a wide selection of seasonal dishes with locally sourced vegetables.

Although pasta has always been something of a vegetarian fallback for many restaurants, at Zilli Green the pasta dishes have zing and diners will find mouth watering creations such as Angel Hair Pasta Siciliana with Halloumi or Pumpkin Ravioli with Butter, Sage and Nutmeg Sauce. If pasta is not your thing, Zilli Green has everything from Tempura to Tofu Cakes to tempt vegetarians and vegans alike.
