How to Sing High Notes and Keys

To be a good and versatile singer, you should have a wide vocal range. Although many top singers have narrow vocal ranges, it is usually the singers who can display more flexibility in their voices who are more successful.

If you are a singer with a low vocal range, I am sure you will want to widen your range in order to sing in higher keys and hitting the higher notes with ease. This of course can be done.

There are three parts to it if you want to sing higher notes and keys. They are your body posture, the psychology of singing the higher notes and of course, practicing with the right vocal exercises.

Unknown to most people, even to some professional singers, your body posture is an important element in producing a good clean singing voice. Believe it or not, your posture plays a very important role in your voice tonality and the range of the notes you can sing.

A good singing teacher will zoom in on the importance of your body posture once you begin your training. Unfortunately, most aspiring singers just concentrate on the songs and neglect their postures and as a result, they are never successful at hitting the high notes gracefully.

I know that you have seen many singers performing sitting down, but standing up to sing will release a better sound. Look straight out at eye level, never hunch, or crouch or tensed up your throat when singing. Yes, rock singers do that and they shout too which is damaging to the vocal cords, so is it any wonder why most rock singers have raspy voices?

You must also be relaxed, so that your voice will flow smoothly. If your body is all tensed up, your voice will also sound tensed and unnatural. So do dress in loose fitting comfortable clothes and shoes when practicing your vocal lessons or even when performing.

Now, since the objective is to stay relaxed, you should never practice or sing when you are upset, tensed, tired or angry. This is because the tension in your voice being produced in these states of emotion may be embedded in your muscle memory and you may reproduce these tensed voices the next time you sing or practice and will then have to unlearn the muscle memory.

The psychological preparation for singing a higher range of notes and keys is to focus on your singing and not get distracted. Since there is more concentration and focus, you will be able to hit the notes more easily.

Next, practice, drill and rehearse with the right vocal exercises that train your voice to sing higher notes. You need the exercises to condition your vocal cord muscles in such a way that if can configure itself to vibrate in a higher frequency that resonates your singing mechanism to hit the higher keys and notes. If you practice the right vocal exercises, you may be pleasantly surprised that you can sing up another octave in just a matter of weeks.

So remember the three main components in your ability to sing in higher keys and range. They are your body posture, your singing psychology and practicing with the right vocal exercises that are designed to train your vocal cords to hit high notes.
