Planning a Lawn Sprinkler System

When planning a lawn sprinkler system for your gardening needs, proper planning and forethought should be taken before choosing a setup. Today’s sprinkler systems are automated timing devices with adjustments that tell the system how and when to water in each zone. There are four basic watering systems that are in use today, with each one being suited to a particular situation. For covering the ground of a large lawn, there are spray head sprinklers. Rotor sprinklers will cover larger properties. There are bubbler sprinklers which are best suited to watering trees and smaller plants. There is also a drip irrigation system, which is slow-dripped through supply lines to plants and trees.

Begin by measuring your property’s dimensions and layout. You will also need string, stakes and a carpenter’s level. After taking the measurements, you will need to draw a diagram using a drawing compass, graph paper, and a ruler. Mark the location of plants, out buildings, and any other micro-climates in the area. Call up your utility companies to come and mark any buried utilities such as cable, gas lines, and water lines.

Next, you must decide what kind of system and sprinkler heads will work best for the property you want to cover. Remember that bubbler systems will water the smallest areas. To water a medium sized area, a fixed sprayer sprinkler system works best, while the largest area can be covered by a rotor sprinkler system, especially if you have more than a few acres. Drip emitters cover a small amount of ground with a system of tubes that lie on top of the ground and drip water to the base of trees and plants.

You will then have to measure the pressure and water flow capacity of the system you chose, and put in the sprinklers that you selected. You should not have any overlap with the sprinklers or you will over-water certain areas. You should be able to ascertain the final irrigation zones based on the flow to the sprinkler system and the available supply of water. It would be in your best interest to now consult with a plumbing specialist to plot the locations of irrigation, values, timers, and the zones you want them in.

There are many advantages to installing a sprinkler system on your property. It will save you money through the use of timers, is relatively easy to install and maintain, and can increase the overall value of your home. You should be able to find a reputable dealer that can install a system to adequately suit your property’s needs.

If you install the proper system through careful planning and research, you will have a garden, tree, and lawn area that will not dry out during times of seasonal drought. Moisture will stay in the soil to keep your plants well watered even when you leave on vacation or are otherwise unavailable to maintain your lawn. Having the correct amount of moisture at just the right times means your prized plants, trees, and garden will have the water they need to flourish.
