Lyrics From the Movies: Notable Winners of the Oscar Best Original Song Category
The Oscar Awards is the most prestigious award-winning body that recognizes achievement in film. But while the Oscars is more noted for the prizes it gives to exemplary films, there is one award here that musicians anticipate and aspire for: The Best Original Song award. This award is given to songs that are part of the soundtrack of a film, and it recognizes achievement for musical excellence (from the musical arrangement, production, and the lyrics, among others). The songs that have won in this category work in several levels. For some, the lyrics of these songs add depth to the film, while the others rely on the lyrics and the music of these songs to move the narrative forward. Of course, the songs and their corresponding lyrics as an extension of the film are not necessarily the criteria for winning this category. What matters most here is the quality of the music, the beauty of the lyrics, and the excellence of the song.
A number of songs that have won the Best Original were from musical films or from films where music, lyrics, and songs play a huge part. This usually includes animated features such as The Prince of Egypt, Tarzan, and Monsters Inc. The lyrics of these songs do not always jive with the song of the movie. For instance, the lyrics of “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan only pertain to a small portion of the story of the film. But the lyrics of “If I Didn’t Have You” from Monsters Inc. fit the movie like a glove. Sample lyrics: “If I were a rich man / With a million or two / I’d live in a penthouse / In a room with a view / And if I were handsome / Well it could happen / Those dreams do come true / I wouldn’t have nothin’ if I didn’t have you.”
There have been instances when the stars involved in the film would perform songs for its soundtrack-and would later on win in the Best Song category in the Oscars. An example of this is Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for the film 8 Mile. Since the lyrics of this song were written during the production of the film (meaning it was written specifically for the film), it sums up or tackles much of the plot and themes of the film. For example, “The soul’s escaping, through this hole that it’s gaping / This world is mine for the taking / Make me king, as we move toward a, new world order / A normal life is boring, but superstardom’s close to post mortem.” Eminem’s win may have surprised many, since the Oscars is known to pick the most obvious choice. Yet Eminem’s smart and witty lyrics have managed to win the hearts of the Oscar voters.
One of the lyricists and composers who have won the most number of awards in this category include Tim Rice and Alan Bergman. These two remain to be familiar until today, thanks to their timely and contemporary lyrics. Rice’s and Bergman’s lyrics are subtle introspections of life (as in the lyrics of Bergman’s “The Way We Were” for the movie of the same title) while maintaining its freshness and being innovative while working on traditional tools and standards (as in Rice’s “You Must Love Me” from Evita).
