Importance of Bed Time Stories in a Child’s Life

Honestly, I grew up on bedtime stories and these have stayed in my memory to date. These bedtime stories influenced me to such an extent that even when I surpassed the age of narrating them, I was used to create some story in my mind each night before sleeping. But let me also add here that I used to fall asleep much ahead of the end of the story.

The significance of bedtime stories is always understated. All that life’s about is stories that end only with death. At time even death doesn’t end stories, as we do hear people who had secret lives which are revealed only after they have died. Novels and stories, although being works of fiction, have a tiny germ of reality that is concealed somewhere. Sometimes even the author is unaware that he has inserted a tiny bit of himself in the story.

When a child listens to a story he or she enters an altogether different world. When you tell them something unbelievable or exciting you can see their mouths open with shock or their eyes become wide as they are amazed. When we start reading a book, majority of us become a fraction of that story. When we read the pages and are wrapped up by the contents, we get enclosed in a make believe cocoon. Many times we feel as if we are transported to the location where the story happened.

A child learns a lot due to story telling. It helps to develop the brain and the child learns to think out of the box. It also strengthens their spiritual and emotional growth. Once you narrate a story it just does not end there for the child. Later, the child will reflect on it till the following morning and the child will ponder on the events of the story and what caused them. This is the reason why many times your child will suddenly ask you questions on the story that they related to. You must have forgotten about the story completely the next day.

Parents must read suitable stories to their children at bedtime or during the day. Minds of children are like sponges, they are very fast in absorbing information and tend to believe all that is spoken to them. Their behavior and thinking are in a way influenced by stories. Stories also have an effect on their values and morals. So you see, reading the appropriate story to the child will help in improving their vocabulary and also are responsible in shaping their future lives.

Children love to hear fairy tales as they are fond of being transported to distant magical lands. Such fables also arouse imagination and children like imitating those characters. Stories with morals have an impact on the child’s life and it is a great way to imbibe good values in the child. You must never narrate a scary story to a child in the night. He might not be able to sleep due to fear of imaginary beasts and ghosts. The best bed time stories are the ones that are not so exciting but have a soothing effect on the child and put the child to sleep.

The other advantage of bed time stories is that it helps you bond with your child. It shows that you keep aside everything and spend quality time with your child at the end of the day and seal it with a good night’s kiss. Fathers are the best when it comes to bedtime stories. Narrating bedtime stories must be followed by all parents and they should continue till the child reaches an age where they are able to read for themselves.
