Genital Warts Treatment – Is Surgery the Only Way Out?

If you have noticed some gray growths in your genital area then you just cannot ignore it. You need to act as fast as you can. There is every possibility that those gray growths are genital warts. These warts are also known by the name of venereal warts and they represent the most common sexually transmitted disease.

Genital warts are caused by a virus known as the Human pappilomavirus (HPV). These warts are common both in men and women and can affect you at any age. Genital warts treatment is important because in about 10% cases these warts can become malignant. These warts are a major cause of cervical cancer in women.

Causes

Before knowing about the treatment you need to know about the causes of these warts. Once you are aware of the causes of warts treating them becomes a whole lot easier.

– It has been seen that in almost two-third cases people develop the warts if they are sexually intimate with people who have the warts.
– Multiple sex partner is a major cause of the warts.
– Becoming sexually active at an early age.
– The warts are indirectly associated with birth control pills.

Care at Home

Now that you know the causes of genital warts you need to follow a few things at home if you are affected by the warts.

– Prevent trauma in the area
– Don’t touch the warts
– Prevent transmitting them to your sexual partner

Medical Treatment

You can opt for medical treatment. However you will need to keep in mind that no treatment is 100% effective. It is impossible to eliminate HMV once it has occurred.

– Cryotherapy- The warts are frozen using liquid of nitrogen or “cryoprobe”. The success rate of this treatment is high.
– Laser treatment- Laser rays are used to physically destroy the warts. Local anesthesia needs to be administered for this treatment.
– Electrodissection- An electric current is used to remove the warts. This treatment also requires local anesthesia.

Medicines

There are several medications used for genital warts treatment. And you can use them as an alternative to the medical treatments. Some medicines that you can use if you are affected by warts are

– Podophyllum resin- This medicine is applied by a health care practitioner topically.
– Podofilox- You can apply this topically at home. This medicine is more effective than Podophyllum resin. Podofilox can prevent the occurrence of warts as well.
– Trichloroacetic acid- This too can be applied topically. However the response rate is not that encouraging and it may cause burning and pain.

Surgery

The last option is surgery. Local anesthesia is administered and the warts are cut off. Surgeries are quite effective but there are chances the warts might recur. Recurrence rate is as high as 25%-55%.

Genital warts or venereal warts are the most common sexually transmitted disease. If you are affected by the warts you need to treat them immediately. The good news is several treatments are available but the bad news is none of the treatment can guarantee that the warts will not recur.
