Safety Exits – Run For Your Lives!

Accidents or emergencies in workplace are often threatening to the workers. The employees have to face fire hazards, short circuits and other potential emergencies. Many people die as a result of emergency in work just because they are not trained for it. This is why in times of fire breakout or any other crises, people rush in panic. For instance, you will see the workers climbing on industrial ladder or aluminum ladder to reach to the top. They may find a safe spot but the right approach is to look for emergency exits.

All the workers will know where to go if they have been trained about fire hazards and safety. They should exactly know where all exits are. In case, an exit route is blocked during fire or explosion, the workers can head for other safety exits. You would be wondering what an exit route is? Let us find out!

It is mainly a clear path that has to be unobstructed. This is the most direct channel through which the workers can reach a place of safety. An exit route mainly has the following three parts:

1. Exit access: It is the portion of exit route that can directly lead the workers to an exit.

2. Exit: An exit is usually at a distance and provides a protected channel to the exit discharge.

3. Exit discharge: Finally, exit discharge is the place that can lead the workers into the street outside the building.

A big question is how many exit routes a workplace should have?

Usually, two safety exit routes are ample for a workplace. However, it will depend upon how big the building is. More exit routes will facilitate quick evacuation of different occupants of the building. Every safety exit should be located as far away from each other as possible. In case, one is blocked by fire or smoke, others remain accessible. With that known, let us move on to the requirements for exits.

Firstly, all exits should be made out of fire-resistant material. The material should be such that it can bear heat due to fire. An exit should have at least one hour fire resistance rating if it connects less than three floors. Similarly, an exit connecting more than three floors should be capable of resisting fire for two hours.

Secondly, exits should only have openings that can take the occupants straight to a safe place. Extra openings in exits are discouraged. Moreover, the openings should have a self closing system installed with approved fire doors.

Apart from installing these well protected safety exits, the employer also needs to train its workers. Every employee should be educated about fire hazards and know exactly what to do in a state of emergency. After all, safety of the workers is essential in any work environment.

All workers should be trained on how to escape during an evacuation. In case, the workers have to use firefighting equipment then they must be trained accordingly. It is important that they are familiar with all safety exits. Plus, they should be told exactly where to go when they find any exit crowded.
