What Qualifies as Hypoallergenic Bedding?

For a very long time, people just lived with their allergies. In fact, even today, very few allergies are treatable in the sense of the term. The only thing we can do is to avoid their respective triggers like crazy.

It is surprising to note that several allergies begin from our homes, and many of them from our beds. Certain materials used in the making of our beds attract allergens and provide a conducive environment for their growth. That is why so many of us wake up in the morning with headaches, breathing disorders, and skin rashes.

Hypoallergenic bedding as a concept has been around for several years already, but over the last couple of years there have been several technological breakthroughs that have made them into a reality – and economical enough for everyone to afford. By definition, hypoallergenic beddings are those which inhibit the growth of allergens by sealing the mattress and pillows completely. This does not allow external substances like hair, dust, and mites to get into the mattress. A sealed mattress remains sealed, and that simple change can solve many of our allergy problems.

It is a fact that certain materials encourage the growth of mites and allergens. Some of them are natural, and most of them are artificial fillers used in our mattresses and pillows. Hypoallergenic mattresses do not use these materials in their construction, and that by default inhibits the growth and spread of mites which cause allergy. Since most hypoallergenic bedding is made of natural materials like wool, latex, silk, and special grade cotton, it naturally inhibits the growth of such organisms. And there are several other health benefits of natural bedding – like moisture absorption and an ability to counter damp smells.

One kind of hypoallergenic bedding is what we mentioned – of being completely sealed and resistant to allergy causing substances. The other kind is a more recent addition and is growing in popularity quite fast. That is of a slip-on which makes any kind of bedding hypoallergenic. These covers are available for the whole bedding – including the mattress, the pillows, and the blankets, and do exactly the same thing done by the other kind of hypoallergenic bedding – seal the whole set in a way that nothing gets in or out. Since it does not need a customer to change his entire bedding set, this option is quickly gaining in popularity. One such option is Smart Silk, which – like the name suggests – is a bedding cover made entirely in a special quality of silk. Silk is naturally resistant to mites and allergens, and has the ability to control body temperature in addition to being moisture resistant. A cover of silk on top of the entire bedding allows us to convert our existing bedding into a hypoallergenic one, and this has been approved by leading certifying agencies like The Asthma and Allergy foundation of America and the Asthma society of Canada.

So basically, customers have two options when they look at buying hypoallergenic bedding – either shift the entire bedding set certified to a hypoallergenic one, or pick up a slip-on that is certified to make the existing bedding hypoallergenic. Both are popular options, and both allow us to have more peaceful sleep!
