Men have many hobbies throughout their lives from golfing to driving, and many others prefer darts or adrenalin filled crazes such as BASE jumping or parachuting. But one of the main activities or hobbies for men around the world is fishing. Fishing is popular with any age, but is usually a sport for the male of our species, although some woman do like to fish. Millions of fishermen around the world rely on their boats as a livelihood for themselves and their families. Many small villages depend upon these fisher men and their little fishing boats, for food and an income into the village.

Fishing boats can range in size from one man tiny inflatable, to the giant factory trawlers of the Japanese fishing fleet. The average fishing boat around the world is about 4 meters in length, and can sit four people comfortably, including their fishing tackle. Some people prefer the fishing boats with a little cabin on it, called a cuddy. These are used as a room for a toilet or somewhere to get out of the weather if necessary, and are mainly used for sea fishing. Fishing boats without cabins are mainly used on lakes and reservoirs for such things as fly fishing. Nearly all of these fishing boats will come with trailers so they can be towed to which ever lake the owner intends to fish on.

Fishing boats are mainly made of wood or fiberglass. The newer fiberglass models of fishing boats are the types which are used for deep sea fishing tours across the globe. These fishing boats are filled with all the modern high tech equipment such as fish finders, satellite navigation and every other kind of equipment necessary for tracking and catching the big fish of the oceans. The deep sea fishing trips make a phenomenally exciting day, the fishing boat will travel miles to find the fish that the client requires, including Marlin and tuna. Using a small fishing boat to catch tuna is useless, as these fish can grow in excess of three meters in length.

These new fishing boats are very expensive, and they do require a lot of maintenance to keep them running in top form. The engines are usually steam cleaned once a year and oil changes are frequent. The sea water will affect every part of the fishing boat in one way or another, so care must be taken at all times to clean the boat thoroughly. The propellers and shafts are usually cleaned in fresh water, and every night after a full days use on the ocean waves, the boat covers will be placed over the top of the fishing boat. This will protect the boat from the ravages of the weather and of the sea.

Sea going fishing boats will have a smaller boat towed behind them, these boats are called tenders, and they have their own little portable out board engine. These are in case something happens to the main fishing boat, passengers can use this tender to escape or go and get help. In some countries, it is the law to have a tender boat. Fishing boats are fantastic fun and can give a life time of pleasure, and can also create a trusting and lasting bond between father and son.
