You can help protect your children from other dangers, including stray animals and strangers, by making sure that children know how to confront those situations if no adult is around. Take the time to talk to your children and tell them what to do if they are approached by a stranger. Likewise, make sure that they know how to act if they see a stray or suspicious animal on or near your property. The best thing to do in the latter situation is to have the kids avoid the animal and go inside. Once they are safely inside they should inform an adult.

The dangers of playing outdoors don’t come just from dangerous people or animals. There may be other dangers in your own yard, some of which you may not be aware of. Before allowing your children to play in the yard, take a thorough glance around to see if there any potential dangers. Check fences and decks for sharp corners or protruding nails. Ensure that any hazardous chemicals, such as lawn fertilizer, are safely locked up and out of reach. Other hazards may include poisonous bushes, beehives, and spiderwebs. Make sure that your children have plenty of safe toys to play with, to reduce the possibility that they’ll look elsewhere in your yard for things to play with.

Vigilance and common sense are the keys to keeping your children safe. If you can’t be with your children while they are playing in the yard, make sure that they understand how to deal with potential dangers and create a plan that is simple and easy to remember. Playing in the yard should be an enjoyable part of childhood and it’s up to you, as parents, to make sure that it stays enjoyable!
