When you’re asked what the job of the Wedding MC is you might first of all think “to give a speech”, or “to crack jokes”, or “to make a fool of yourself”. However, that’s concentrating on just one part of the job – the part that most people fear, namely public speaking.

The real job of the Wedding MC is simply stated; to make sure the wedding runs smoothly.

That means on one hand making announcements throughout the day to make sure the wedding guests know what is supposed to be happening, where it is happening and when it is supposed to start. The receiving line, the entrance of the Bride and Groom, serving of the wedding breakfast, the speeches, cutting the cake… they all fall into this category.

However, as well as make these announcements, the wedding MC should be prepared to lend a hand behind the scenes when things don’t to right, to put things back on track and help with the million and one things that can unravel in the background.

It helps to approach the job with humour and confidence. It also helps to get the wedding guests on your side from the start, which is why many Wedding MCs employ humour throughout.

Whether or not you consider yourself a natural comic, it does pay to prepare some jokes and one-liners before the big day. Make a note of them so you can consult your list before standing up to make an announcement and providing you have rehearsed them first they should slip out easily.

Anecdotes work particularly well, especially if the humour is self-depreciating and the laugh is on you. Even lightly ribbing other guests, particularly the bride and groom or their family, can be taken the wrong way or just badly – avoid at all costs, unless you are also the Best Man, in which case you will be expected to give the Groom a hard time.

And likewise, make sure your jokes are clean and you aren’t going to upset anyone with your wedding MC jokes and will help you on your way to perform the task flawlessly.

If the thought of public speaking makes your palms sweat, butterflies seem to have nested in your stomach and you feel sick every time you think of the wedding day, at least have the knowledge that you’re not alone – almost everyone on earth has a natural fear of public speaking.

That may not provide much relief, but the good news is that by putting a bit of thought and practice in before the day actually happens you’ll be well on your way to starting confidently and once you’ve started the rest will be easy.

By now you should have a schedule of what is happening on the day details the times, places and people involved, as well as any other details you may like to remember that will help you. Knowing WHAT is happening is half the battle, as once you possess that information you can plan what you want to say.
