Saunas and Their Health Benefits

Throughout history saunas have been used to help relax and improve one’s well being and health. Saunas have been available in private clubs, resorts and spas until recently when more people are installing them in their private residences. There are a couple of styles available that are freestanding. The first type of sauna has one heater with hot lava rocks which we have all seen. Poring water on them creates steam. They are made from poplar and glass and do not use any adhesives or plywood. They can have an optional infrared backrest.

The second type of sauna can be constructed from poplar or cedar and has a few ceramic heaters which surround you at a comfortable temperature. This is the infrared, radiant heat, or long heat style. It can penetrate a couple of inches into the skin and has therapeutic benefits such as dissolving fat and releasing toxins. They provide relaxation, increased blood circulation, reduced cellulite, increased energy, stress relief and an overall feeling of well-being. One can easily burn 300 to 600 calories in a half hour by just sitting. They are easy to set up and do not require any special tools or wiring. Small units require a 110v plug and use about as much energy as a hair dryer. Large units require a 220v plug also use very little electricity.

They can be placed indoors or outdoors, they have fresh air vents that allow you to breathe easily and they can be used whenever you want. Take a shower first to wash off any oils on your skin and you can then relax in your own private retreat. Some have built-in stereo systems allowing you to listen to your favorite music.

Using heat for the removal of toxins from the body dates back to ancient times. People who regularly use them have reported that they have lower blood pressure, improved sleeping patterns, fewer allergies, restored energy levels and increased mental clarity. There has been evidence of restored liver and immune system function as well.

Blood vessels become more flexible and there is increased circulation to the extremities. Blood flow to the skin increases by as much as 50 to 75 percent of cardiac output compared to the norm which is 5 to 10 percent. This brings nutrients to the subcutaneous and surface tissues giving your skin a healthy glow.

Steam baths and saunas induce sweating that provides a cleansing of the skin and sweat glands. Skin is the largest organ of the body and 30 percent of body waste is passed through the skin. Heavy sweating enhances detoxification through the skin by opening pores and flushing impurities from your body.

The skin temperature rises to 40 degrees Centigrade or 104 degrees Fahrenheit and the internal body temperature rises to 38 degrees Centigrade or 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. High heat creates an artificial fever state and fever is a natural healing process for the body. It stimulates the immune system resulting in increased production of disease fighting white blood cells, antibodies and interferon which is an anti-viral protein that has cancer fighting properties.

Saunas and steam baths loosen fatty tissue and assist in ridding the body of cellulite. Many people claim they ward off cold and flu symptoms.
