Some Details on Blackout Curtains

When the topic is about blackout curtains, people generally have the idea that they are used in only two: to keep the whole room dark and to keep the whole room insulated. It may be true, as there are indeed rooms that would need to be dark all the time. Watching movies or TV in a home entertainment room won’t be as thrilling if the room is bright. Nor will a person who works at night and sleep during the day be appreciative of a well-lighted room with thin curtains. Thus, this kind of room would need to simulate night time so that the person sleeping during daytime would be well-rested.

There are a lot of varieties of blackout curtains available in the market these days. Some may differ according to the material they are made of; examples of these are polyester and fire resistant material. Another classification of these curtains is the way they are installed. There are those that are installed like normal curtains that are hung in a curtain bar and there are some varieties that are installed in a style that drapes are. Lastly, there are also those that may be pulled up or down like roller blinds. Of course, an obvious classification of them is their thickness and ability to block light, which in turn determines their price. The thicker the curtain is, the more insulated the room will be and thus the less light can enter the room, if at all. The thickest type of curtains will, of course, be the most expensive of them.

Blackout curtains should be very effective during the summer season in keeping the heat out of a room while keeping the inside of the living space cool. This is because sunlight or heat should be blocked out with the use of the curtains. Having this set-up will save the homeowner electricity because there won’t be a need to turn on the air conditioner the whole time and yet have the temperature of the house just right. On the opposite end, when it is winter and very cold outside, these curtains can be used with closed windows so that the temperature inside will be kept warm and not be affected by how cold it will be outside.

These curtains should also prove helpful if a homeowner keeps plants inside the house. After the right amount of exposure to sunlight, plants need to be kept away or else, they may wilt from too much sunlight exposure. One can’t keep on rearranging the placement of the plants everyday just so that they won’t get too much sunlight. These curtains can be drawn instead if the homeowner feels that his or her plants have already reached their limit of maximum sun exposure.

In picking out a blackout curtains, the three factors to be considered should be:

– The fit of the curtain: The fit of the curtain to the window where it will be placed is of utmost importance to any curtain, but most of all to blackout ones. If the curtain is too short or too narrow, then it will not be effecting in blocking light or heat from coming in to the room.

– The installation method: Experts say the most effective at keeping light and air away are curtains that hang on a track.

– The color: The aesthetic is important as well. One can’t sacrifice this aspect, as there are already curtains that are of the blackout variety that are not black.
