Components and Types of Steel Buildings

Prefabricated toro steel buildings are a popular choice for applications as varied as airplane hangers and backyard sheds. Whatever the application, these buildings are cost effective and low maintenance. These buildings today are a lot more than Quonset huts.

The word prefabricated can refer to a few different types of manufacturing and construction process. Panel building is a construction process that utilizes complete wall panels made in a factory and transported to the building site. Modular construction is similar to panel building. But the factory built components are more complex and can include entire pre-built rooms that are joined together on site.

There are homes that are completely manufactured. Mobile homes are an example. And there are kit homes. The individual elements of a kit home are pre-packaged and ready for assembly, but kit homes do not include preassembled modules.

Steel buildings come in different types. The classic Quonset hut prefab building is the most common, at least in the mind of the public. This type of building is known in the construction industry as an Arch type of building. The other types of these building is a Straight Wall building. Whether Straight Wall or Arch, a building may also be classified as either Clear or Multiple Span. A Multiple Span building has interior supports. A Clear Span has no interior supports.

It should be noted that in the prefabricated construction industry, the terms Arch and Straight Wall categorizes the external shape of the building. It does not refer to the actual structural design. Strictly speaking, a Straight Wall building is technically an arch building if a rigid frame is used. In practice, people refer to buildings using a curved roof as the criteria for an Arch building.

When we talk about the span we are talking about the internal structure. A Clear Span building made of steel uses support beams overhead, often of girder type construction. These overhead beams span the width of the building. This reduces the number of support columns needed or eliminates them entirely. The smaller the building, the more cost efficient the Clear Span technique. For agricultural and garage applications, the arched, Clear Span style is an extremely cost effective choice. However, once we are of a width that requires the installation of girders as roof supports, the cost effectiveness of the Clear Span style is reduced.

Arched clear span buildings are cost efficient for some uses, such as garages and in agricultural operations. Straight Wall buildings have more enclosed and usable space when compared to an Arch prefab with the same size footprint. Additionally, straight wall buildings are easier to attach to and blend with an existing structure.

There are 5 types of components to steel structures. These types can be further divided into Members and Connections. The word Connections in this context encompasses any means used to connect the Member components. Examples of Connections found in these construction are rivets, welds and nut and bolts assemblies. Types of Member components are Tension, Compression, Bending and Combined Force.
